First of all I would like to say that I am proud new owner of a very clean Black on Black 98 GS400. I have previously owned a 02’ IS300 and still currently own a SC400 that I will be selling. I have gone through this process before with previous cars, but it is very important to me that I get this correct the first try.
I have read through the GS Wheel and Tire fitment guide and I still have a few questions regarding a tire sizes. I do not want to mess with any fender mods and I would like to keep my ride stock height.
I am looking at a set of 19X8.5 +35(f) and 19X9.5+45(r) for wheels. To match stock specs I would need to run a 235/35 and 275/30 to match the stock setup, but I have noticed that there is a pretty good size gap with the stock wheel and tire combo. The fitment guide suggests 245/40 tires on a 19X8.5” and 275/35 on a 19X9.5”. Does the larger tire help fill the gaps or is there another reason for this suggestion?
I myself like to keep the same diameter on the tires so you don't affect speedometer accuracy. If you do that, no matter what size tire and rim, the diameter will be the same, just more rim than tire which usually looks nicer. If you want to "fill in the gaps", you can do that with lowering springs and fit heavy duty shocks when you do that so your stock shocks won't blow. Of course you would like to keep the stock ride height, so to fill in gaps you would be looking at a larger diameter overall of rim and tire. That will affect the accuracy of your speedometer. If you go to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html you can mess around with tire sizes and see how it will affect your speedometer readings. By The Way, Congrats on the 98 GS4.
