Default wet driver side carpet - NYC group repair organization for the summer of 09

wet driver side carpet caused by a leak in the ac condensor cover/heater core.

now that the warmer weather has come, i turned on my ac this week and my driver's side carpet is wet again from the leak. has anyone in new york gotten this fixed outside of lexus? lexus is going to cost way too much...

edit: anyone in NYC need to get this done? if someone knows of an independent mechanic we can get it fixed together for cheaper possibly? worst comes to worst we could try to get a deal set up with lexus if a few of us fixes this issue at the same time. let me know.

let me know if anyone wants to get their leaking a/c fixed this summer. let's try to get some sort of group deal at either an independent mechanic or even at lexus in the worst case scenario.

I had the same problem last summer... Took it to Lexus and they told me the same story "ac condensor cover/heater core" at least that's what they thought... Turns out it was the evaporater box that had a leak at the seams (common problem in GS's). Lexus would not replace this part as they will only sell you the entire assembly (go figure). Did not want to spend 2K+ so I had my mechanic repair the evap box and reinstall. So far so good, I used it an additional 3 to 4 months and used it a few times this year and no leaks so far. FYI - Entire dash must be taken apart to access a/c condensor, evap box. Good Luck !!!

lol....u got a believer hiho...

gscrazy don't try "sealing" a ac condenser when and not if, when it leaks again your gonna spend more money/time then you would have done repairing this thing right the first time. plus make sure you dont have any a clogged evaporator line.

if you gonna go through all the time/effort of removing dash just replace this...BUT FIRST MAKE SURE THATS YOUR PROBLEM

here's a couple topics on this

i have argued this with hiho back and forth on those pages i sent you....i personally wouldn't go to his mechanic as i think of this as a bandaid instead of a repair but again this is JUST my opinion. go with whatever is best for you!

me....no im in memphis tn dont know any mechanics there

Hey GScrazy,
My mechanic was prepared to change the whole assembly, if needed. Turned out I had a pinhole leak at the bottom seam of the evaporator box, mechanic pulled dash apart (very scary to look at), pulled evap box out, filled with water and showed me where the leak was coming from. The evap box comes in 2 halves which are joined together at the seams, unfortunately it is NOT 1 solid peice. If you're evap box has a crack, then you're most likely having to replace the entire assembly or find the evap box at a junkyard. Pinhole leaks at the seams, in my opinion can be easily re-sealed again (all labor no material). It's been a year now and no leaks, so far so good. Mechanic had this same fix on another GS which had the same exact problem (common in GSs) and it's been 3 years now for him and no problems. Do the math, even if this $600 bandaid last three or more years, it's 1/5 the cost to change the entire assembly when you ONLY need that $75 evap box. One would figure that you can buy the box alone (trust me, I tried) but you CANNOT, at least not new.

As far as "sealing a A/C condenser" (sakatj), i would NOT reccommend, I'm referring to the evap box which is made from fiberglass/plastic. My fix only cost me 5 or 600 bucks vs the 3000 Lexus wanted. My mechanic would probably charge someone else more money but he owed me (my brother) a big favor. BTW He's in Brooklyn... Good luck with yours, if you do get a group buy going, I'd love to know how low Lexus would go.
