Hey GScrazy,
My mechanic was prepared to change the whole assembly, if needed. Turned out I had a pinhole leak at the bottom seam of the evaporator box, mechanic pulled dash apart (very scary to look at), pulled evap box out, filled with water and showed me where the leak was coming from. The evap box comes in 2 halves which are joined together at the seams, unfortunately it is NOT 1 solid peice. If you're evap box has a crack, then you're most likely having to replace the entire assembly or find the evap box at a junkyard. Pinhole leaks at the seams, in my opinion can be easily re-sealed again (all labor no material). It's been a year now and no leaks, so far so good. Mechanic had this same fix on another GS which had the same exact problem (common in GSs) and it's been 3 years now for him and no problems. Do the math, even if this $600 bandaid last three or more years, it's 1/5 the cost to change the entire assembly when you ONLY need that $75 evap box. One would figure that you can buy the box alone (trust me, I tried) but you CANNOT, at least not new.
As far as "sealing a A/C condenser" (sakatj), i would NOT reccommend, I'm referring to the evap box which is made from fiberglass/plastic. My fix only cost me 5 or 600 bucks vs the 3000 Lexus wanted. My mechanic would probably charge someone else more money but he owed me (my brother) a big favor. BTW He's in Brooklyn... Good luck with yours, if you do get a group buy going, I'd love to know how low Lexus would go.
