Default Surging idle, TPS problem?

Today I pulled the TB to clean it (it was filthy!) and I pulled the plastic cover piece on the TB off as I thought the IACV was under it. Pulled the big silver motor thing off and it looked clean so I just screwed it back on and put the cap back on. I put the TB back on, started the car and the idle is surging bad from 2K down to 900 and back up non stop. I checked the TB gasket and hoses for leaks and all checked out, then I unplugged the tps and the car idled smoothly (a bit higher than normal but smooth). So, with it unplugged the dash malfunction lights come on but with it plugged in they do not so... wth?

Could I have knocked out it of adjustment taking the cover off? Has anyone else had this problem? I searched for surging idle on here but didn't find much help...

Thanks-

Mine did a similar thing with the high idle after I cleaned my TB and I just drove the car around for a little while and things got better. The fumes from the cleaner may be causing your engine/sensors to be running odd for a little while but should get better with more miles. Check again to make sure everything was put back right, did you clean your MAF?

I didn't clean the MAF, I didn't want to use the TB cleaner on it so I was going to go buy some MAF cleaner after I put it all back together.

If it was just a high idle it wouldn't bother me so much but it's surging over 1000rpms each way so I am scared to drive it. It's like a bad vacuum leak but when I unplug the TPS it's fine so it's not a leak. It has to be something to do with that TPS but I didn't even mess with it.

*bump* any ideas?

I tried rotating the TPS but it didn't make any difference, it still surges bad. I guess I'm going to see how it drives with it unplugged.

Just because unplugging it smooths the idle does that automatically point to a bad TPS or could it be something else? Has anyone had similar issues after cleaning their throttle body?

*sigh*

Well, it drove no where because the gas pedal isn't doing ****. I press it and nothing, it just moves under idle load... WTF, all I did was clean the damn TB.

Hi guys, one important thing to remember is when putting the tps back on, you want to put it on at an angle and turn counter clockwise to line up the 2 screws. If you find yourself turning clockwise to line up screws on tps, you will force the throttle to be open and receive high rpm and pedal response issues, as well as check engine light.
