a terrible monday here. Woke up this morning started the car went to work & voila.. CEL came on soon as I left the driveway. Went to advanced auto after work and got it read. P0980 Shift solenoid C control something high. Has anyone dealt with this before?? I searched to no avail on this code. Thanks for any and all of your input
Sounds like one of the shift solenoids in the tranny (there's 5 I believe, but it depends on the vehicle). They are small and you can hold them in your hand. A transmission shop could likely do the work (not hard at all, but no need to really take it to a dealer), basically taking off the tranny pan, the tranny filter, the valve body and then one could access the solenoids. I'd probably pull the battery cables off and let the vehicle reset itself and then see if the code pops back up.
When driving it, did you notice any strange shifting of the tranny? The C solenoid should control switching between 2nd and 3rd, and may cause it to shift very late in the RPM band. Definitely not something to drive with for a long period.
Thanks guys, yeah I am getting it in this week. The light has now gone off, weird. But yeah Mack I have noticed some difference in its drive. It almost has seemed dull & hasn't had a lot of pickup at all. Damn this pisses me off

Tranny code. What I suggest is reset the light. When was the last time you had a transmission fluid change? Did you use Toyota Fluid Type IV? If not, IMO go flush the tranny fluid with Toyo Type IV fluid. Using the wrong fluid when cause the solenoids go bad (as my mechanic says). GL!
Thanks GS Fiend I haven't changed the fluid and if I did it definitely would have been Toyota Type IV. What about resetting the light? So now that its off its all good? Car still doesn't seem to be driving right.
