Default Could gas prices be ....

for all the 2nd Gen owners here on this site ...

Could gas prices be the killer of the reason eveyone is flocking to buy them ? I am readng post about college students, or im to cheap to maintain this car ... ect ...

I have seen the price drop in Nissans ... but I am thiking they are selling those to upgrade ... to a 2nd gen gs ...

Are you worries that our cars will be getting played out ? what are your thoughts ? If to many people are buying them .. are you still keeping ? or moving up th ladder ? or have you invested to much money ?

Or you love the style no matter how many you have seen ? or have you invested to much to turn back ?

just food for thoughts... since our Gs platforms are getting cheaper ..

I wouldn't think the high gas prices would cause people to want to look at buying a GS since there are so many other cars that get much better fuel economy than the GS. Anyway, I bought mine because I like the style. I just bought my 03 GS430 a couple weeks ago. This would be my 5th Lexus. Had a 99 LS400 and I like the GS430 much better in terms of overall driving feel.

I don't plan on dumping as much money in the GS as I have for past cars, but I do plan on modding it and like every other car I'll keep it as long as I want or sell it when I get board with it. The market prices, who is buying it all mean nothing to me. Since the car is no longer in production, the same amount of GS will still be out there. In fact, there will be less and less each year as GS's get into accidents and totaled out.

everyone is climbing the ladder, 2nd gen gs is TOO cheap nowadays, heck 7-8.5 grand for a clean 100k mile gs.

Whats the diff how much they cost? Do you think your not as good anymore because other ppl can afford them now? Do you need a car that other ppl cant afford to be satisfied? I think someone has some superiority complex issues....

I will keep mine for a long time. Too much money put into it lol. Anyways, I don't think it will get played out too badly. Also, the people who actually put serious money into these cars will be set apart by miles VS the people who cheap out. I've seen it on IS300's and there are kids that go cheap and it's extremely obvious they did so. Have a properly modded one sitting next to a cheaped out one and the difference will be immediately apparent.

No offense if anyone has done the following...I'm sure you will do better in the future , but I'm just giving some examples:

- First off, when people that used to mod a Honda move onto the Lexus world. They scoff when they see the prices on aftermarket upgrades for these cars. Oh boy, wait till they "move up" to a BMW/Benz($10k body kits anyone lol). They either bite the bullet and slowly get used to it and save up/mod properly. Or they hop on ebay and buy parts at the prices they were used to paying in the past.

- Cheap rims($500 ebay special) instead of spending roughly $1000-1500 more for a nice set. Not really knocking this since there are some cheaper wheels that do look nice. So this doesn't really take any big points off, but at car shows you will get owned for it.

- Painting STOCK calipers red. They're stock, no need to higlight that to the world. Black is ok, but don't do red on stock calipers lol.

- Body kits...well where do I start lol. There are 2 categories: real/genuine kits that fit well, and there are the knockoffs that have gaps up to 1" in some areas!

- Chrome over kill. When you have to have chrome everywhere. Chrome pillars, chrome headlight/taillight rings, etc. It's cheap on ebay so why not!

- Then there are the engine "upgrades"...lack of/or doing it improperly.

One good example is people with MK3 supras that try to play in the big leagues with MK4 boys. Some...and I do mean some as in very few people do it right. Many do not.

Ahh well whatever just my little rant, but I think you guys get the idea. My motto is if you can't mod it right then leave it stock!

IMO this is the main reason why sales have taking off lately, not really gas prices

yeah gas prices would definitely be one of the last reasons to get a gs. I'm not as concerned for the ricers but people getting them to throw 22's on them with all the chrome accents. Ricers would probably not choose the gs because they would be considered "slow" in some aspects.

Guys the car is literally over 10 years old now. The 2GS was in dealerships FALL 1997 as a 1998 model. Also Lexus sold the most GSs from 1998-2002.

It happens to every car, we just have to GUIDE people to do things the right way.

I don't have a problem seeing more GSs, thats a good thing. What killed the GSs look was so many other car makers taking cues from it where it no longer looked as original.

Me, I'm going to mod her and grin.

I'm gonna tune mine up and make it my beater to replace my LS, and get 06+ SC430. I've been neglecting both my cars lately, especially the GS, over 100K on the clock and no major maintenance done.

I'm keeping mine. No point in selling as I would take a loss selling it. But I love the look of the car and anything else that I want I can't afford.

Jeff is the man. Preach on about red stock calipers! LOL

I dont think the car will be played out in the sense that everyone will have the same mods. There will always be less GS on the road today as there were 1 year ago. Most will either mod it a good deal, or will leave it stock. Heck I see GS everywhere around here, but they're all stock. Not to mention, most are driven by older men and women who probably bought the car close to new. Many 'kids' just dont see the GS as a good car to mod because they dont associate lexus with being upgradeable when it comes to performance mods.

I stopped modding my car because of its old platform and I tried to turn it into something that it was never meant to be. My car is now 90% stock and it's duty is to be a cruiser.

There are gs's everywhere but not many modded ones to me only a modded lexus (body wise) will turn your head whether it is a 11sec or 16 sec car. I say do something to your car to set them appart from the rest. And if you spend under 10k for a clean one like i did there's nothing wrong with that i mean most people will think its newer and more expensive than it was, they dont know. Enjoy them i love em.

Im keeping mine FOREVER, no lie.

i think what jeff said is pretty much right, if you mod it right, it will be noticeably better than the rest. (im still working on mine)

Besides, most people are too dumb to buy a GS anyways. They think that a newer KIA is a better deal than a used lexus at the same price. I feel sorry for them...
