Question Stock HID replacement question.

I have 98 gs4 with stock HID, and I need to replace it. Can I buy aftermarket HID kit to replace it? Or I have to buy only stock kit(ballasts, bulbs etc)?

Just buy new bulbs. You can find genuine phillips D2R bulbs on ebay for about $90 shipped. Dealer will want at least 150 per bulb.

Most likely your ballasts are still good. Our ballasts are VERY good. I've ran them through some torture and they operate like new.

Well the thing is I need new ballasts as well, so let's say I'll buy HID kit from ebay with D2R bulbs, will they fit/work correctly as stock system?

i don't think so.. the hid kit is for 9006/9005 bulbs i believe. your stock hid head light uses dr2 bulbs, unless you find a kit for d2r, i haven't seen any. but i'm no expert.

How do you know you need new ballasts?

Anyays, you need to buy a kit that will accept D2S/D2R bulbs.

Take a look at hidplanet.com and look in their classified section. There are plenty of ballasts being sold on that forum.

I found aftermarket D2R kit for about 160 shipped. So if it's D2R will I have any problems with installing and operation of HIDs?

Yes. As long as the bulbs are D2R then they'll fit in your car.

most likely you have to mount the ballest somewhere else than on your light. the bulbs will fit.

if the HID kit is a D2R/D2S kit then it would work with your car. the ballast would fit under the headlights like the OEM ones, so you would have to mount it somewhere else like the post stated above ^^
just make sure you a quality HID kit, they're a lot of them out there and the cheap ones don't last that long. i hope this helps answers all your questions.

OEM ballasts as in the same 1st gen Denso/Kioto on our car? They pretty hard to find other than at the dealer. best you can do is fine some OEM-type ballasts for other cars.

You can probably find the Denso ballasts on eBay then get some bulbs from Cliff.

DO NOT buy a kit from ebay. they are all garbage.

xenonking.com has color tempatures 3000k-10000k, and if you type in coupon code "xkgoog" itll give you 20% off. VisionPro kits (like mine) will be 179 shipped with the discount, and McCulloch kits will be ~199 shipped with the discount.
