Muffler options...
Hi guys,
My Greddy mufflers need to come off the car because they are too loud for the Mrs. I would like some suggestions and please no negative comments regarding my wife because I already spent energy trying to convince her otherwise.
These are my options...
1) Go back to stock and change the puny stock tips. Is changing out the stock tips doable?
2) Go with a quieter aftermarket exhaust - it has to be not much louder than stock at both idle and WOT. Any suggestions? Borla, HKS, and Apexi are out because I know they are loud. What about L-tuned? is it pretty loud. DO i even need a less restrictive exhaust to do any other engine mods? She is Ok with other engine mods BUT not the loudness of the Greddy.
Thanks for any help.

Brent,
I think that if the Borla is considered too loud then the L-tuned will be too loud too. Does your wife not like the sound at idle, a resonance or at WOT? That might help you decide on which route to go. My guess is probably back to stock and bigger tips.
FWIW: No way you should get negative comments about your wife (or I for mine)! They are angels
to put up or encourage us as much as they do with our hobby.

Hey Brent,
I am in the same situation you are. My wife will kill me if I make the car sound louder than factory, plus not really good for my corporate work image. So, basically I am looking for a very quite exhaust. After reading past threads dealing with this, here is what I suggest.
The 3 aftermarket mufflers you should consider that are not too loud.
1. L-tuned
2. Borla SS but NOT the CF (Carbon Fiber) they are too loud
3. L-Sportline - Very expensive
Even these exhaust are louder over stock and several people have resold them under the classifieds because they were too loud. People should also consider other mods to their cars than can affect the exhaust sound. If you have an aftermarket intake and than you change to an aftermaket exhaust... the sound will definately be highe!
I plan on just doing the tips to maintain the quite lexus soun, but to give it a sportier look.
The muffler tips on the new GS430 are about .75 inches wider than the early gs400's. They are much nicer looking and more noticeable. I might buy these for $60/piece, or I might get the Borla SS oval tips only, NOT the muffler. My last resort is to check out the local speed shop and the tips they offer.
Has anyone considered attaching tips from a CLK430 or a CL type S? They both are about 4 inches wide and ovalish in shape.

I'd reccomend going back to stock and changing the tips. You're not going to achieve any more power (maybe a couple) by changing the mufflers. I have the 60mm Apexi N1's and truth be told, they are pretty quiet. You can't tell you have any aftermarket mufflers above 2600-2800 RPM and they make a pretty decent soft rumbling noise at idle. I can barely tell the difference from inside the car when driving. For what they cost, it wasn't worth the 1-2 horsepower they probably gave me... luckily my friends are going to buy them from me - I won't be losing all my money

Brent,
LSportline (expansive) is pretty quiet. I took a ride with WhiteDiamond before, I believe he has megaflow exhausts, that one is pretty quiet too. However, if not cat-back, the gain is very limited. Therefore, changing tip may be enough for you. You pay $75 for the look.

The drone inside with the Ltuned can be greatly reduced by driving in Manual (GS400) and keeping the rpm little higher above 2.3K . There is sufficient room between the body and the LTuned exhaust, one of these days I might try to add a thick layer of under coat.

The L-Tuned isn't too bad and the boss hasn't complained when she drives it.. I found the Borla a bit louder and I haven't heard the L-Sportline..
So I guess your options are new exhaust tips on the stock units which is possible or L-Tuned / L-Sportline / Borla.. My 2 cents the L-Tuned are the best of all worlds..
Hope that helps!
