Default Help needed, doing water pump & timing belt on 2002 GS300

Hey Guys,

I was trying to get the crank bolt off yesterday, but was unable to, that thing is either torqued like crazy or seized on.

I tried heating the bolt up, but that didn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it off?

Also a techician told me that since i heated up the bolt, that i need to replace the pulley now, is that true? I don't see why i would have to.

tomtsops from what I understand this is a big undertaking. I have a gs300 and have tried to find this same thread, unfortunately, I could not find one.

Here is a link for the service manual that might help:

http://www.bedlib.org/ebsco.html

click on the Auto Repair Reference Center logo to go to the login page.

Then scroll down in the list and select ARRC

Keep us posted with your progress and maybe submit a DIY when completed.

Hope it helps and GL.

well i have a manual that gives you step by step instructions, and i'm also working with a friend of mine who owns a supra, so he's very familiar with the engine.

the only issue right now is getting this bolt off, and also whether i need to replace the pulley since i have heated the bolt.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm trying to get an air compressor from a friend with a 400 ft-lb impact wrench, however i first need to make sure that the gun isn't too big, and can actually fit where i want it to go.

I'm trying to do the exact same thing right now but my engine is out of the car. That damn bolt just won't budge lol. I've tried everything. My impact gun is only 375ft/lb. Didn't do jack. I put on a 5ft extension on the breaker bar and that damn bolt just wont budge lol. I'm about to get an even loger bar to try out later or rent an industrial 2000ft/lb impact gun.

What you can try since your engine is still in the car, put the breaker bar and nut on the bolt. Have the right side of the bar sitting against the floor and then crank the motor just a split second. That's how a bunch of the supra guys get that damned crank bolt off Yes I'm serious and it works. I just can't do it since my engine is no longer in the car.

JeffTsai this is great can you do one of your DIYs for this. You are very good with visual and verbal explainations. I will be doing this same project in a few months and know that I will have questions even with the sevice manual. Having one of your DIYs for this project will be all I need.

Hey Jeff, funny you mention that because I've already tried it (my friend working on it with me is a supra guy lol). However it did not work. My car was elevated about 1 foot in the air at the time though, so now that its back on the ground, i'm going to try again today because the bar is sticking out of the car more now (more torque!). I've also sprayed the bolt with WD-40 in hopes that it will also help.

Hey Jeff, how do you make sure the crank shaft doesn't turn counterclock wise while you're trying to loosen the bolt?

the crankshaft will ONLY rotate clockwise. Since you are taking a bar to it, by engine turning clockwise, it will loosen the bolt.

i recently put a lighten crank pulley on i put a breaker bar on and just turn the engine over but make sure you put the bar on the right side so when the motor turns it will force the bar to the floor.because the motor turns clock wise, make sure you dont crank it up, it will loosen up the bolt, i read it on here awhile back thats why i try it and it work for me do at own risk lol

Breaker bar is called that because it's used to break bolts loose. Basically a really long socket tool without the ratcheting to give you more leverage. Most of them are 18-24" in length. To make it longer for more leverage, simply get a long steel pipe and slide it over the breaker bar.
