NAV -- comparisons and a possible solution...
Hey all,
Have a '98 GS 400. Didn't get the NAV 'cuz I heard the DVD was much better,(should have got it anyway-- too late now). But I hate the cheezy looking aftermarket attachments which clutter the console. However, look at this ---
http://www.meaa-mea.com/products/e_navigation.asp
It appears to be a screen that "pops-up" from the top of the dash. Even if it doesn't retract, it appears to look alot better than most side-mounted consoles. I don't have the 1st clue as who to contact for questions or installation. This is my runner-up to going OEM, (O-$$$-E-$$$-M).
It seemed the 2000 Infiniti I30 was prepped w/ the same format, but I'm not sure of the final outcome...
Here's another one that comes out of the center console,(still seems a bit cluttered):

Finally, here's the solution most go with,(this one's in an SC400) -- In my opinion I would rather go without than to have this:

ANY input, good or bad, is appreciated. I live in Southern California, and am constantly, (aaarrrrrghhh!!!), reminded of what a bonehead move it was for me to go without the NAV. If only the new GS430 had E-shift, I'd have parted w/ my '98 long ago...
Sorry for the long post, but this has been eating at me for a long time. Thanks!!!

The pop out unit would be best to deter theft. Myself, I wasnt going to even buy a GS unless I got the Nav. Though it is the HD nav, im extremely happy with it and have gone from CA to NY with it. Would not buy another Lexus or other premium car without a Nav system installed. I wasnt a believer before, now I am.
I've talked to my trusted stereo shop about doing something like a pop-up screen. I'm sure it's possible. I think there's alot of space available on top of the dash. If you put some kind of pop-up motorized monitor there, it can hide under, but it'll block the A/C's air path. But that's cool, because when you retract the screen, most likely you won't be in the car anyways. So you won't need A/C.

Globe -- Thanks for the hot tip on Autosound Specialists, I'll call them on Monday, (if they're open!). I have an office in Huntington Beach, so maybe I can cruise by their shop and discuss it with them. Who knows, maybe they'll have an even better solution.
Your feedback is much appreciated!
