Default I thurst for More knowledge..

All right every one, I would like to start off by apologizing for pissing anyone off for posting this thread, lol I'm pretty sure the information I'm looking for is out there but I just can't seem to find it, ( I guess thats why I got the rookie status..) and excuse the novice level of the questions that I'm about to ask, but I gotta start somewhere..here goes..

1. What is "Fender Rolling" and why do I need to do that when I want to install 20' rims on my vehicle?

2. In reguards to rims, what does the "Wheel offset" size mean?

3. What sizes would you guys recommend for my GS with out making any major modifications? (I would like to slap on 20's)

thanks for your help!

1. You dont' need to fender roll when you put on 20s. It all depends on your offset and tire width.

2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offset_%28wheel%29

3. Do you have any wheels in mind?

There are plenty of 20" sized wheels that fit without fender mods. A 40+ Offset shouldnt have any rubbing.

Fender Rolling - is the modification one must perform when they install bigger rims/tires that rub while driving and/or turning. Check out this site to see the process http://www.bmwdiy.info/fender-rolling/index.html

Wheel Offset - The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The offset can be one of three types.

20s should fit fine

side note: do NOT fender roll your lexus! cutting and filling in sheet metal is a much better option than rolling it.

what sizes would you guys recommend? 208x5 front 209x5 rear?
or would 9x5 front 10 rear look better?

I think most have 8.5 in the front and 9.5 or 10 in rear. Offset on my 20's is +42.

9.5 front will be a tight fit. I would shoot for an 8.5 front 9.5 or 10 rear.

Many members on CL have tried fender rolling...all of them came back and told us not to.

I second and third that. Paint chipping is the least of your worries with rolling. First off, the rear panels are layered with a "skin" and when you roll, it will creates waves and pinch points on the body where the plastic insert for the screw that sits on the inside tab of the fender. Then, if you want it straight, you can have PDR done, but if it's rolled, the only way to get it straight is to do filler and paint... and uh, now your into it for bucks and possibly mismatched paint... way more than ever needed.

The better result is this, shave to a smaller lip, and have someone fill the gap to join the "skin" and protect from rust and then once it's nice and smooth, your safe.

For the fronts, there is no "skin", but once the tab is cut back, you'll need to have the inner wheel well liner heated and molded up, because once the lip is removed, it will hang down. Remeber to have it rust protected, cutting = exposed metal = rust = ... you get the point.

Fender mods on a GS are fun!!! <sarcasm fully implied and executed>

Please, please, please, find someone who has done this on a GS, not someone who says "yeah, I can do it", find someone who says "yeah, I've done it on a GS".

Why did I not find this until it was too late???

Had my fender rolled and I'm still pissed everytime I wash my car, and spend 20 minutes after with touch up paint correcting the crap! Don't get your fender rolled - trust me!!!
