I bought a 93 gs3 w/38k miles on it a few months ago. Beautiful car. Great bargain. Near perfect condition. EXCEPT for the CD player. It sucked. I had to depower (unplug for 30 seconds - which may fix your problem - for a while) it at least once per week to reset the firmware. Also, it skipped at the hint of a bump and I would have to cycle back through the stack to get back to where it was playing. I called around - was a told it was a common problem - and would be nearly a grand to fix it or get a replacement - and even then the skipping might not be much better.
My solution: Replace the whole thing with an indash Nakamici MB-75. $600 w/labor. As of now I have no doubts it was the right thing to do. The stock player in my car was, IMHO, garbage.

depower does that mean just unplug the cd player or the battery from the car. also do i have to take off the + and the - or will just the + do. also do i have to use a rubber wrench or anything any precautions thanks
Yes, you can do the battery, but you can also unplug it in the trunk. There should be a connector/plug right there - underneath the mat. You just have to get all voltage off it - for several seconds.
When it failed mine - usually - would cycle through the disks - like you say, and then when I pressed the cd button - nada - except 'ERR' would come on the console. After I reset it, it would work until I reloaded it. Usually it could reload OK, but every third or fourth load it would lock up. And NOTHING except pulling the plug would reset it. I tried every possible way to load it. No go.
IMO it's fundamentally bad design. Both the CD player itself, and where it's located in the car. Worst possible place to mount a vibe sensitive device - except maybe on the bumper ;/.

i have a 93 gs300. i called the dealer they said i think around 600 dollars for a new headunit. totally not worth it. i think that i can fix it myself if i new what was wrong with it. my brother is good with electronics and stuff so i'm sure we can fix it together we just don't know where to start head unit or the cd changer. also how do i take the headunit out of its place.??
We are having a similar problem in our '93 LS400. The cd changer started making a static-like sound randomly. Then it went out.....BUT....when I turn the volume ALL THE WAY up, I can hear the cd playing and the display is showing the track info. Radio works perfectly.
