I'm now thinking about going with 5.25" components up front and Zapco amp(s). I may do Rockford Fosgate amps and add the 3sixty sound processor to get some awesome sound from the factory HU. I'm still at the cross-roads, but leaning towards a Zapco reference series amp....if my wife will let me spend that much.
No one here has mentioned that replacement speakers do not directly bolt in. Adapters need to be made. I used to make them but I just don't have the time lately. I am considering making a PDF template for other members to print out and make their own adapters but again it will take time I don't have right now. I just thought you should know before you buy your speakers and get all excited and start to install then you find out it's a no go.
is that replacing them with 6.5 in speakers or even the factory sized 4 in?
my honest opinon is kno what your budget is, kno what kind of sound you want. clean and clear, loud and hard... after market speakers will fit only on the back. the fronts you would need to get some wood or brackets to fit them in well. or at least to hold them in place. i would definitely go with components, clean and clear. (boston acoustic - pro series) same for the backs and then just get 1/2 10" subs run it with either 2 amp (1- 2ch, 1-4ch) or 1-6ch amp. ur gonna need a cap as well. get quality amps, dont get something with just the name and its all expensive, go with Zapco amps. great quality amps for decent $$$. oh one more thing i kno you kno this, close box's are better. to make it even better, take the insides of the pillow and stuff the close box with it.. makes a big diff to sound....
Let's put it this way if you're buying your car audio at a big box store the SQ is going to suck or be one baby step above sucking.
You might be able to use the OEM head unit but you will probably have to use some sort of line level to RCA converter which will add to the suckiness of a ghetto-fabulous system.
IMHO if you're upgrading the speakers you might as well go from the anemic 4" to aftermarket 6.5" in all four doors, this will also help fill out the mid/bass range. You can find pre-made adapters on eBay.
I'm old school and my system from teh early 90's is now going into a 3rd different car.
Everything is run by a Soundstream 6 X 30 watt amp. The single eD SQ 10" sub mounted on the rear deck is on 5/6 channel bridged to 100 watts. Plenty of power to push that sub CLEANLY with the windows down @ highway speeds.
If I can ever get to it I have Boston Acoustics Rally 6.5 components going into the front doors and Boston Acoustics 6.5" coaxials for the rear doors. 30 Watts per speaker is plenty , unless of course your going to compete. Then my system is a 98 pound weakling.
j version, I haven't touched the system in the GS, but from what I saw taking the front door panel off you're gonna have to make or buy an adapter for any speaker you put in, regardless of the size. Any other car I've done this in 1/2" or 3/4" MDF, a jigsaw, and a little thought should be all you need. Sound deadening the doors is a good idea though.
BossGS4, for old school, I just pulled a US Amps Xterminator 400x from around 2000 out of my old car and I've got a Sony CDX-C90 sitting in a drawer in the garage.
