i think thats the stepper motor for the ETCS-i its attatched to the throttle butterfly which retards the throttle when the vsc kicks in.

I thought the stepper motor was in complete control of the butterfly? The phyiscal cable will only pull open the throttle like 20-30% if the stepper goes out...the cable is only there for emergencies so the car will still be drivable but slow. Under normal operation the car should be fully throttle by wire.

In English: In the engine air intake manifold, there is something called a butterfly valve that controls how much air is let into the engine. When your foot is off the gas, the valve is almost closed...just a very small opening. When you press down on the gas pedal, the valve will rotate to let more air in. As for the stepper motor, our cars have a throttle by wire system. This means that the computer detects how much your foot is on the gas and opens the valve accordingly. The valve is pretty much hooked up directly to the motor. If the motor goes out, your car will be moving very slowly, but the car should still be drivable.

The 1999 2JZ is controlled by a throttle cable. BUT, the stepper motor can relax the throttle opening by way of a mechanism. So in that sense its not throttle by wire.

lol...well long story short. That "black thing" is needed to control how much air goes into the engine. It's the stepper motor for the butterfly valve.
