I am just curious how do we size up against the A6/4.2? I have seen some guys driving pretty aggressively with them on the street.

 

4.2 has nice interior. Nice wide flares on the exterior. Handles well with the sport package. Has a V8 but is not that quick. 0-60 around 6.5-6.6 and the 1/4 maybe 14.9-15.2. Good luxury car. Price range ~52-55k. Only comes in automatic. They need to get some more umph outta that engine but someday the S6 will be here so I dont know what the marketing plan is.
The A6 2.7 6 speed is quicker, doesnt have the wide flares stock they run about 5.8-6.0 0-60 and some have posted timeslips at 14.43 stock best times. Average around 14.6. Cost ~42k.
A6 2.7Automatic runs 6.4-6.6 0-60 and 14.9-15.1 1/4 stock.
Chipped A6 2.7 automatic has run 14.02 1/4 and 5.48 0-60mph. I dont have chipped 6 speed figures.
Warranty is nice . all inclusive, brake pads, wiper. oil you name it. A6 had some problems with fuel senders, instrument clusters, some headliner squeaks. Service is only so-so and resale so-so.
A6 's do have quattro which is nice in rain or bad conditions.
Lexus better resale, service, and I would bet reliability.
Both are nice cars. The weather may be the final factor in choosing one of these cars. Oh and I think the GS has more aftermarket goodies than the 4.2.

My friend has that car in black. I know that the NAV sucks on that and doesn't the 4.2 pack 300 HP?

 

GS430/400 will smoke Audi A6 4.2 period. Been there, Done that.

as for Audi 2.7T, the fastest time I saw is around 6.1 no way it could reach 5.4?? where you got that data from?
even S4 can only pull 5.9 the top. I assume the same engine A6 2.7T is heavier thus slower?

Get your facts straight, if your 2.7T is that fast the s4 is as fast as M3 then.... no possible.

 

oh sorry I didn't read the little words "Chipped" but since we are talking about stock 4.2 vs GS430/400 so if you wanna talk about your "chipped" 2.7t please start another thread.

 

Dieselman63 your are right the Nav does stink. 4.2 300hp. Weighs around 3900-4000lbs. Not as quick as GS4 series. Straight line speed from the standstill the 4.2 would not do so well !! I would think both these cars love the freeway speeds!! Nice highways movers.

Yes chipped makes a big difference in the turbo motor. The 5.4 and 14.02, 14..5,14.06 all are my times done at Carlsbad Drags with the automatic. (I was running the Gtech during the 1/4 at Carlsbad to get the 0-60). The Gtech was surprisingly accurate in the 1/4 mile time usually within .05. Top speed was higher on the Gtech vs the time slip by 2mph on the average.

Just added the 2.7 features because they are all A6's. It was just for information purposes. Sorry to offend.

those are great info on the audis. i have always like the "4 rings audi " for its legendary QTRO system. if only their relaibility can be up to par as the lex. the A6 4.2 is very nice on the subtle fender flair, and the interior materail is nice too.

but i always wonder the reason for its "not quite as fast" for a 300hp car. i read the a6 is coming out w/new design soon, so the prices are much lower than msrp. a6 2.7t is good pric for what you are getting, if only they have the "fender flare"- something to distinguish from the rest of audis.

ming, just curious, where do you get the "chip"? is it at various tuners? or dealer instaled? how much? thanks

From what I've read, the S6 sedan is not scheduled (nor is planned) for the states, only the S6 Avant (wagon).

Any word on the RS6 coming here?

Globe, I know what you mean about that S3. I saw those when I was in Europe earlier this summer and they rock. They even have Golf GTI's w/ 4motion (quattro). Sweet little cars!

 

Hey thanks guys......I do have to admit that those A6 with the flared rear fender does make them look pretty intimidating.

They don't even sell Audi models in Wichita, Kanasas. I would of liked to have test driven a quattro model. I have a Grand Cherokee for winter driving, but I am sure the Quattro would be a lot more fun. I didn't want to have to go 200 miles or more every time it needed service or warrenty work.

 

I think it is fair to compare a chipped version of the Audi because a) it is so easy / inexpensive to do and b) nearly everyone I know with the turbo Audi's chip them. It seems as though you have a better chance running into one of them then a stock one.

I have to say, I love the A6. My wife and I put a deposit on one for her. A great car when purchased new with a warranty. For reliability reasons, I would not purchase it used like I did my Lexus.

 

I think its the gearing on the 4.2 that hampers it in the 0-60.

Just checked the weight of the A6 4.2 it is 4024lbs.

Chips void warranty. There is rumor of Audi getting with one chip maker and will offer a warrantied version someday.
CHip on 2.7 make 315hp and 360lbs torque. Stock is 250hp and 258lbs torque.
Chip costs $595. So it makes it real affordable to upgrade and get performance increase.
GIAC, APR, Wett, MTM,AMS and there are some others.
THey have different versions of chips, in fact some have it set up as a switch(using cruise control stock) and you can change programs on your own. Example,, stock to chipped or race chip program(100 octane) or valet(has a speed/rpm limit set I believe so they cant race your car around). Should also have a teenager mode too!!! LOL. Limit the speed to 65 max!!!!
GIAC will be using a remote to control the programs.
There is a chip for the 4.2 but since its NA, the gain is only ~10-15hp and 5-15lbs torque. Same cost.
Man I dont blame you for not getting one if service is 200 miles away!! That far away a Lexus,Acura,Honda,Toyota would be my choices!! They seem to be the most reliable cars.

S6 Avant the only S6 coming here that is correct. Would be nice to see the RS6 and RS4 here.

I have been all over AUDI for years about bringing in an RS4 or RS6 to the states. I have sent them letters, made calls, only to get a continuous run around.

Finally, I have found out the "Real Deal" from a friend who works for VW over in Europe.

Audi is NOT bringing the RS6 or RS4 here at all. Emissions certification is too costly on such a limited produciton car(s). Not only that, but AUDI has been developing the RS6 in conjuntion with Cosworth Engineering, and they have run into massive overheating problems with the car. Although that has appeared in many magazines, what hasn't been printed is that its due to the constrictive size of the engine bay in the A6, and AUDI is most likely going to introduce the RS6 in the next gen A6 body.

To be frank, living in the Northeast hasn't been a joy with my GS400. As much as I love the car, I know I need an AWD car for my next ride, and my only option is the A6 2.7T. Thats it. I only wish the GS came in AWD. The Mercedes E-class finally is available in 4matic (their version of AWD) with the 4.3 liter V8. But no manual. Plus its kind of an "older person's car". From my understanding, the A6 2.7T can be easily modified to 400 RELIABLE horsepower! A new chip (already discussed here), intercooler, and fuel pump are all that is needed. All the internals in that motor/tranny setup have been tested by Audi/VW to well in excess of 600 HP!!!

One other site noted a $98K price, so it won't be cheap. Still, a twin-turbo V8 sounds drool-worthy! If only Audi would upgrade their navigation system to something reasonable I might consider them when shopping...
