Duh! My mistake. Not having a navi, I didn't realize that your HVAC controls are part of your OEM navi.

Hmmmm.............. I wonder if I could remove my HVAC controls and incorporate some HVAC function into the Pioneer system?

What control unit? The one I already have in my car? (meaning the HVAC control)

I have 99 GS400 and upgraded to factory nav system - mine is the HD based version. going to try to upgrade to the 01+ DVD based system in the next month.

if you are interested email this guy- he has a harness and factory nav systems Gus - egusman@woh.rr.com.

let me know if you have any questions.

What is the reason why anyone would do that? Makes absolutely no sense to me.

A much better path to take is to install an aftermarket navigation system in your non-navi equipped car or to remove your HD based OEM navi and install an after market navi in your car. Much, much cheaper route than getting rid of your modded car or trying to upgrade your HD based navi to an OEM DVD based navi.

You can pick up one of the best aftermarket navigation systems on the market for less than $1400.00 shipped (brand new on ebay), and have it installed for under $800.00.

The model to get is the Pioneer AVIC-88DVD navigation system with the Pioneer AVD-6210 6.5 inch LCD monitor.

This is exactly what I plan to do for my non-navi equipped 99 GS400.

yup, now you know hameed to me, i have yet to see ANY aftermarket setup to be anything close to what the oem nav does. yeah i know, the display might be better, voice recognition and what not. but none of them is like the oem one, all integrated, so clean, from factory.

you ever wonder why i still have not touched any of my audio and put in a nav system? that's why. it's pretty frustrating that i have yet to see ONE system that i like more than the factory... and doing a factory nav retro is just too costly as well

I guess my priorities are slightly different than yours! I will have a nav setup in my car that is waaaaay better than factory, but may or may not (depending on who is looking at it) look better than factory. To me the function is more important than the look. It can be made to look good, just not as good as a factory nav with the HVAC integrated into it.

Well, to me, the integrated nature of the OEM Navi is only an issue if you have Nav (HD) and is upgrading to a more recent Nav (DVD) like NT2SHBBY is trying to do. Otherwise, the non-nav cars already have HVAC controls and going aftermarket makes more sense. I have HVAC controls integrated with Nav in the screen on my MDX. When I first got it, I found it more annoying than having dedicated hard buttons. I'm used to it now but I don't need it to be integrated and can go either way without it bothering me.

Of course, we each have our priorities so the goals are different. This is one area (Nav upgrade) where rominl and I, no matter how good friends we are and have somewhat similar tastes, will disagree.

yup, different priorities i guess. with the nav on my sc430, i think i am very much satisfied with what the stock one can give me already. i don't even care about the notepad or whatever, as long as it's able to get me there

with that said, then i guess the look come next

and on the audio, i am sure i can get all crazy if i want, but after driving my sc430 for so long with the ml setup, i guess that's good enough for me

I'm with Henry on this one - I would never go with an aftermarket NAV or HU on a Lexus. RMMGS4's setup looks extremely clean, but like Henry said, it doesn't look factory.

Here's a pic of my old 99 GS4's factory unit for comparison, and yes, I know the 2001+ NAV looks a lot nicer.
