I have a 1999 GS300 and need to replace the whole headlight unit on the driver side from an accident, but I'm not sure what type of headlight it is: HID or non-HID. And also what is the difference between the two? I haven't taken out the unit yet to check the model/serial number if there's any on it. Any help would be appreciated. TIA
If your driver's side headlight is working, when you turn your lights on, you should see the auto-leveling (light will move down then up). Also, assuming the lightbulbs are stock, the HID light has a whiter color as opposed to the yellower halogen color.
I think your best bet is the auto-leveling. Also, I believe HID came with yellow foglights. I have 2000 model, not sure if it's the same as yours.
park the car so it face the war. start the car and turn on the headlights. do you see the light goes all the way down and then up? if so, you have hid. if not then you don't
given the fact that you have 99 gs300, i am pretty sure you don't have hid, just the normal halogen housing. i think hid only becomes an option on gs300 since 01?
hid - high intensity discharge light, they are totally different system, brighter, and better cutoff line

actually HID was available since 1998 so it could be either way...my 98 has HIDs
