coolant smell in cabin; help!
so, i opened my door and that strong whiff of coolant hit my nose. did the heater core thing under the dash go bad? is that expensive to fix? I didn't get to check my coolant level cuz it was too dark to see. i'll check that in the morning.
another question, car smells like someone pee'd in my car or something cuz the ac smells like *** when i turn it on outside air. is this because of a dirty filter?
thanks for any and all input! peace

could be a leak somewhere. Diagnosis: turn the car on, let it heat up to normal operating temp, and then search for a leak. could be small, but check around all the hoses (could be cracked), and pull off the engine cover to see if its squirting out from anywhere else.
I believe its the heater core!
i had a expedition and the same smell and thing happened! it cost a arm and a leg to fix because they had to pull apart the whole dash board!
See if a light mist is comming out of the vents...SOMETIMES does that and burns the hell out of ur eyes!
Keep us posted!

yes it was burning the sht out of my eyes! Well anyway, today i was driving to go play some cards...and i noticed the temp thing going up so i was like aww ****. pulled over to a gas station where my car was smoking like a mother (from the ac vents). just added some water in the radiator to get the car home for now. anyone got any idea how much this is going to cost to fix? i think it's the core, but if it makes any difference. i parked it and went back a few hours later to find some kind of liquid under the middle of my car. didn't really go and smell it, but it smelt like coolant all around the car heh. not under warranty anymore either. *sigh* lol. peace

That sucks.....For the truck it costed like $580 to $650...i cant remeber which price it was but it was in that range.... and the stuff leaking could just be a busted hose because when my core when the house was burnt off completly so.....ME being a woman would say that its that!
I dont know to much about cars but that sounds like the same problem i had!
I wouldn't drive the car unless your bringing it to the shop because if it was over heating and u keep trying to drive it you could blow your head gasket THEN.....you'll really be broke!!!!
I would call or bring it to the shop first thing IMObut keep me posted and goodluck!!

did a search to look for similar situations ont he problem. so far, i see heater core written all over my dilemma.
"smoke out of ac vents" etc etc
ok, now here's what i didn't want to find:
"i just found out that i have a bad heater core. lexus dealer quoted me at $2,700 to fix the problem, almost all of which is labor costs. the heater core is tucked away between the engine, transmission and dash board. they said they would have to remove the engine to get to it."
ok now that right there is a nightmare lol $2700... holy sweet jesus!
"I just replaced the heater core in my 92 sc 300. Not Any easy job. the repaire manual says you have to take the engine out but I was able to get the job done without engine removal. You have to take the entire guts out of the car from the front seats foreward - even the dash cover and the steel brake strut that runs from side to side. You also have to do some work in the engine area but not too much. I can not see why the repair manual says to remove the engine. If anyone needs info on how to get this job done just let me know and I will be glad to help. The job took about 20 hours but I saved $800 !"
ok this one is a little better. he saved 800, but it took him 20 hours! god, im going to just shoot myself already haha.
"Before you guys get yourselves into too much debt just go and check the fluid level in your radiator. If you don’t have enough fluid in the radiator it bypasses the heater core and just gives the water to the vital engine parts, So just take a moment and check the water level, there is a good chance that the water level is just too low and that is why your not getting hot air to the heater."
ok, that right there is my little beam of hope. There is no coolant all over my floor...yet. the car drove fine after i put the water in the radiator, but when iw ent back to the car, like i said. there was some kidn of fluid all over the floor under the mid of the car.
so anyway, from the looks of it. My car smelt like coolan tlike a few days ago. definitely within 3-5 days. today, it almost over heated and the smoke inside the cabin was going nuts. hopefully i won't get quoted 2700. that's just smokin te pot too lol.
ahh wells, peace all

It sounds pretty ridiculous having to take off the entire engine to remove that little heater core. If it sounds like a hard or expensive job you could probably just cap the lines and not use the the core.
yeah they shouldnt' have to remove the engine...BUT they will definitly have to rip apart the whole dash board section,wires,ect...and it is a 8 hour consistant job...a.k.a. 2 days for shops!!
It may be cheaper going to a NON-Dealership shop! Less dough!!
Also my dad works on cars and he said u can cap it of also....i didnt get back in touch with him to find out how, but if u dont need the heater then u can do that until it is time to get it fixed!!
Good Luck!

It's sounds like heater core. You should just be able to re-route the coolant tubes going into the firewall....Sounds weird to pull the engine to do a heater core. Usually it's through the dash, or behind the glove box somewhere....
ok, so i openned my hood at my friend's shop and took a look around. I think, my heater core is fine for now. My friend suggested that it could be my water pump already. So i'm gonna go and do my timing belt, water pump, thermostat etc etc. hope all is good after i change that out! im just about 80000 miles. hope it fixes things! peace
*edit* ok, i forgot to mention that they didn't use the red coolant that all lexus and toyotas used, they had that green crap in it! GRR!!!!
