Toyota Aristo tops car thieves' shopping lists

Toyota Motor Corp.'s Aristo sedan was the most popular target for car thieves in Japan last year, according to the results of a survey released Thursday.
Of 15 vehicle models of which more than 1,000 cars each were stolen last year, the Aristo topped the list, with one in every 100 Aristos owned being stolen, compared with one in every 1,000 for other models, the research team said.

Toyota's Land Cruiser and Celsior models were both stolen at a rate of seven per 1,000, according to the survey carried out jointly by government agencies and private groups.

The Aristo and Celsior are both sedans, while the Land Cruiser is a sport utility vehicle.

The team, which included officers from the National Police Agency, also found that immobilizers helped prevent thefts of luxury cars. An immobilizer prevents a car from running without a matching key microchip.

For the Aristo model, cars without immobilizers were stolen at a rate 8.6 times that of those equipped with the antitheft system. The rates for the Land Cruiser and the Celsior models were about three times higher without the device, according to the study.

However, almost 30 percent of the vehicles were stolen with the car keys in them, the study found.

Interesting information that some of the home-brand Japan Aristos didn't come with immobilizers in them. At first, I thought it must have been really easy to steal the cars with the immobilizers, but given how most of the stolen ones didn't come with one or had their keys in them, it made a lot of sense why the Aristos and Celsiors were most stolen (i.e. value of the vehicle and its parts).

Is the crime rate in Japan really THAT low that you can leave the keys in the car? I'm so paranoid, I set the alarm 2-4 times until I'm SURE I heard the beep and saw the lights flash!

Haha I can see the next article:

Ò7 of Japans top scientists involved in a extensive 3 year study concluded today that locking your car and taking the keys with you prevented thieves from starting the car with your keys and driving away a staggering %100.Ó

Yes. It's a sad fact of life that as the Japanese become more "westernized", they are also adopting our attitudes towards morality and crime (i.e. if you can get away with it, it's okay).

Try riding the subway in Tokyo. At every station there are tons of bicycles in racks that people rode from home to the station. The difference from what I've seen in American Metro stations? None of the bikes have locks.

Try shopping in a department store in Japan. Walk around the jewelry section and see the multi-thousand-dollar items left unattended in open display cases in the aisles. For most Japanese people, theivery is unconscionable. From a cultural standpoint, it would disgrace the perpetrator and their entire family. From a religious standpoint, it would bring negative consequences in this life or the next.

Can you tell I love visiting Japan? I weep sometimes when I see how enamored they are with the west, knowing that they'll get the bad with the good...
