You 'could' jumper the relay with some wire with the engine running and a/c on and hopefully the clutch will engage for you. Not sure of the negatives of my plan but I know your pain with the heat. I'd probably risk it.
Edit: better idea is to get a voltage meter and see if there is any power getting to the relay.

yaaaahoooooo!!!!
IT GOT FIXED!!!! YESSSSS!!!!!
This is what it is:
For one, MKIV compressors and our compressors are the same with the exception of the inlet plate. I switched this out of my old compressor. Conector is the same, location is the same with the exception of a ground cable coming out of the fuse box that needs to be relocated to a different bolt of the compressor. Other than that, it is the same. =]
Now, there is an internal switch on the compressor that doesen't let it engage unles there is a bit of charge; vacuum your system and add a little of freon. After that, turn the car on, add the required compressor oil (150 pag, 8 oz) and then add the required freon. Bingo.
To re-charge a system that's not totally empty, u can buy a can with the hose (autozone), conect it to the low pressure side (located in the lower left side of the condenser side) and recharge following the instructions of the can. I tell you, u learn something new every day!!!

tell me about it... after driving for only 2 days without ac, I lost 3 lbs. My ride compleatly sucked assballspukecrapmonkeypoodoopee. I tell you, i rather eat ramen for 3 months than having a car with no working ac... specially a full leather interior one
