broken spark plug

Default broken spark plug

Well, here's the deal, i was changing my spark plugs 2 days ago and one decide to break flush to the block. Without taking the head off, is there another way to take that piece of the spark plug out?

If it is just the thread thats left in there and the center is hollow u can maybe use a bolt extractor they may have some at your loacal auto parts. Let me know how or where exactly it broke.

But did any pieces of the plug insulator fall into the combustion chamber?

Will there be any metal shavings from using an easy-out?

You may have to remove the head to be sure ...

The torque spec is 14-18 Ft Lbs for the spark plugs.

yeah just the thread is left in the block and i have to wait for my dad to bring me my drills so i could just drill it out. i talked to some shops here and they told me to use a magnet or shop vac to get the shavings out and maybe compressed air.

You can also use a "left hand drill bit" Its does the same thing as an eas out or bolt extractor, but its easier. It will spin the plug counterclockwise.

seems like your plug may have seized. Take great care not to mess up the threads.

yeah, the spark plug is seized and hopefully i don't screw up the thread, but i guess i could re thread it? Another thing i found out was that the covers for the cam shafts weren't even bolted down, i could unscrew the bolts with my hand and it been shooting oil out for who knows how long? i was wondering why it keep on getting dirty every time i clean the engine bay.

The bolts loosening over time is a common problem according to my dealer. But it has not been talked about here on CL. I noticed it one day while I was doing about 130mph and all of a sudden I saw smoke and oil on my windshield. I thought I blew up the motor. When I got the car home. Called a friend of mine who is a mechanic at Lexus he told me to check the valve cover bolts. When I did, they were loose. I tightened them, cleaned the engine and the problem was gone. Whew!

yeah, i think thats why i been filling up a half a quart or more of oil in between oil changes.

You can use a little Blue loctite on the valve covel bolts that will help keep em in

yeah, i will be doing theses things tomorrow and helpfully it works out so i don't have to take it to the shop, cause school doesn't starts in till 3 weeks and i don't have all my tools to work on my ride.

yeah, the part of the spark plug is not moving at all, i broke one of the extractors, I finally got a hold of my advisor and he's letting me bring my ride into the shop a couple of weeks early so i could get it running. i'm guessing i going to be taking the head and where do i start?
