I used to think PHEV's were a good intermediate solution, but now I think they're just the worst of both worlds. You get ICE maintenance along with battery concerns. I now think it's better to just pick a side.

My 2015 Prius with 143k miles is on the factory battery and factory brakes. Just oil changes and tire rotations so far. Oh yeah engine air filter.
Toyota's hybrid batteries are very reliable hardly any go bad and even if they do replacements are not expensive. The battery pack has an easy life because it never discharges all the way or gets a full charge.

Another plus is that they've been around for so long it's relatively easy to find someone to work on them
