I’ve personally rented a Model 3 twice (standard and performance) and one time I had to make a decision whether to turn on the heat because it was cold and stop at a charging station in an unfamiliar location around midnight or use the seat warmer to save enough juice to make it home and to the closest SC the following morning.
I chose the seat warmer vs stopping but after a while I had to turn on the heat once I exited the highway🥶. I believe I arrived at the SC with less than 20% of charge remaining the following morning.
I know this is personal and relative, but if comfort is the key, no way IMO MYs are great for long trips. There are plenty of midsize ICE SUVs that blow MY away when it comes to long drive comfort. I don't even think long distance comfort is an MY's characteristic. Now adding charging stops, it is no brainer at this point to take EVs for a long trip unless someone wants to experience themselves.

Completely agree with the bolded part.

As you said, I don’t think long distance comfort was a priority when Model Y was being made. It’s great at almost everything else though.

I think the biggest priority was “fun to drive” which the Model Y excels at. No ICE crossover comes close.

To date, Model Y is one of the most fun cars I’ve driven period, ice or electric. It is so responsive and agile, it’s extremely confidence inspiring to drive and it has shockingly high limits when pushed. And it’s also pretty quick at low and high speeds.

Our dogs were along for the ride and they weren't having the best time either. Every bump and impact kept disturbing them between the actual impact and the sound/boominess of it.

EQS is 400v architecture like Tesla.

It might not always be worth waiting for the 250 kW charger. You might as well just use the 150 kW charger (assuming no one else is there halfing the speed). Check out this Model Y charge curve and you'll see what I mean. Tesla Model Y slows down WAY before 80%.
  • It only charges above 200 kW between 6-15%
  • Above 15% and you're charging under 200 kW
  • Above 30% and you're charging under 150 kW

I never wait, if a 250 kW is not available I grab a 150 kW. I must of misread, I thought the EQS had a 400v battery. For sure my Ioniq 5 supports 350 kW, 800v DC charging, and can charge to 80 percent in 18 minutes, but if I took it on the same trip, it would take me 30 minutes to an hour longer to get to my destination because of there being less EA chargers, and not being very reliable. The last charging stop before reaching the outskirts of Southern California is in Bakersfield. There are only four of them (3x 350 kW and 1x 150 kW) and looking at the app, miraculously all 4 are working, but they all in use. The Tesla chargers, which are literally a few hundred feet away, there are 12 of them (all 250 kW) and chances are they are all working. If those are full there are 10 more nearby, and if those are full there are 76 of them another 10 miles further down the road.

Because of EA chargers being down, once a trip in my Polestar went from 7 hours to 10 hours. It only happened once, but once was enough to make me decide to get a Tesla for trips

That is understandable. In the EQS, we once pulled into an EA station that was completely shut down for maintenance. The very rude worker informed me it would be down for at least an hour and to basically f*** off.

The next EA charger was 100 miles away and we had 85 miles of range left. We decided to try and stretch it to the next one and luckily the EQS was able to make it there with 1% battery and 4 miles of range left.

We took a few measures to ensure we’d make it:
-lowest air suspension height for best aero
-eco drive mode
-eco+ climate mode (which keeps it warm but not warm enough to sweat and keeps airflow moving around the cabin)
-drove at the speed limit
-all ambient lighting off
-main display off and just used the instrument cluster (moved all my Navi data here)

It was tense but also kind of fun, I had a feeling it would be able to make it there but it was definitely suspenseful. It left us more impressed with the EQS being able to do what it did that day.

No, it's not just comfort. My Y is about as comfortable as my Sienna, but I would take the Y over the Sienna any day unless I had more than 5 passengers and a bunch of suitcases. If comfort was the priority than I would get something like an RX an X3/X5, or even EQS. It's about performance, glassy smooth drivetrain, instant torque when you need it with no penalty. And with gas being nearly $7 a gallon on the way to SoCal, tell me what luxury SUV that gives you a glass smooth drivetrain, gives you instant torque for passing, and can do it while giving you 100 MPG?

That's an awesome story and an adventure for sure, but taking those kinds of chances is just not in my blood . If you own a Tesla here and run out of charge, it's because you're just an idiot 🤣

Speaking about adventure, I have a co-worker that goes camping in his Y LR. He tows a pop up trailer and tows it to remote locations. He once camped at an areas with no power so was not able to plug in, but luckily going down hill he was able to pickup enough charge using regen! I'm not there yet

So @signdetres I just drove nearly 100 miles on some of the worst freeways and roads SoCal has to offer (91 through Corona, 22 and 5 through Orange County), no issues with noise or bumpiness. I had four passengers, and all of them said they were comfortable, matter what speed I was driving (I was averaging between 70 and 80 mph). I asked my nephew who was sitting in the front seat how the ride and noise was, and he told me it was one of the quietest cars he's driven in. I don't know, maybe you should get your suspension checked, because I'm not experiencing any of the issues with road noise or road feel that you are

The tires that come with the 2023 Long Range are Continental Procontact RX Contisilent XL. Very quiet tires, they also have excellent grip

I just realized I have the same tires, at least I think so they are Continental's. I'm not that swift sometimes.

I'm OCD about things like tires. I'm constantly checking them, and I always do a ton of research on tires that either are already on a car I have or when I'm about to buy a new set

I'm getting winter tires soon the ride might actually improve since winters have very soft rubber. Michelin X-ICE has zero road noise, none. Zip. But above the freezing point the car doesn't handle very well and the tread wears out quickly.

I might get Nokian Hakkapeliitta can't decide. I have both X-Ice and those on my cars there is not much difference between them.

Thank God I don't have to deal with winter tires. It's either Summer or All Season, that's it. If we ever drive to a place that's snowed out in the winter like Tahoe, we rent chains

Chains? lol that is overkill for just about every climate and road. Exceptions are if a road is never cleared and hardly anyone drives on it. Ground clearance will likely get you stuck before you lose traction.

During winter storms, going to places like Tahoe require you to have chains. The reason is limited resources, the roads get iced up, and the majority of people who go there are from the Bay area with either All season or summer tires. No chains, they won't let you through
