Default Windshield Distortion

Well been long time Lexus customer. Noticed that my 21 UL ES300h has distortion in windshield or wavyness especially seen when turning right looking thru passenger side. Dealer has been great. They replaced but still still present. Then checked my wife’s 19 ES300h has it also. Finally checked my dad’s ‘22 ES300h and it has some also. Called Lexus corporate and their stance is “that is the characteristic of the vehicle”. WTF. This is a supplier/tooling problem. Just fix it. Lexus IS supposed to be “relentless pursuit of perfection!!!”

I have a little bit of the same thing, although not enough for me to bother with it. Wonder if it has anything to do with all the features built into the glass: lamination, rain sensing, provision for head-up display, whatever....

I have some as well. Never pursued corrective action as I figured they would just blow me off. It’s tolerable but disappointing. I have experienced this distortion in other windshields before - although only in replacement glass and not factory glass.

If I had the same distortion looking straight ahead, I'd consider it a really serious issue. But the cold fact is, being optically true at the far right of the windshield is less critical to safety, just as perfect function at the bottom of the passenger's side wiper is.

That's normal to some degree for automotive glass. Mass produced, relatively low cost. I've noticed this on six figure cars too. Might have to move way up the chain if you want actual "perfection."

Don't forget at the end of the day the ES is built largely on camry architecture/supply lines.

Yep. Which is why it's more affordable than its luxury competitors. It's a two-edged sword. (Not that the German stuff doesn't have rampant quality problems, too.)

Who’s the manufacturer of the glass? Look at the stamp below the Lexus logo.

All my assembled in Japan Lexus (Rx,GS,ES) uses AGC Automotive for Windscreen, it’s a company founded in Japan with factories all over the world.

I have noticed no distortion at any angles.

Supplier issue?

...
US built 2019 ES 350 Ultra Luxury, AGC Automotive for the windshield, front door windows, back window, and both panorama roof panels. Pilkington for all the rear door windows.

I haven't noticed any issues with any of the glass; however, I haven't engaged OCD mode and obsessively searched for flaws.

My Japan sourced ES is AGC. The issue is easy to see because it’s right in front of the driver’s position, perfectly at face height. I’ve gotten used to it now so it doesn’t bother me as much as it did originally.

That is annoying. Yes our eyes can get used to distortions but shouldn’t be that way especially at drivers eye sight.

Our local regulation don’t even allow for a small windscreen chip around line of sight of the driver.

I think part of the issue too the windshield is large and curved, so if you look to the side, you're looking through the glass at a sideways angle basically. short of something designed for nasa, i don't think you're going to find a distortion free winshield given the shape and size required for ours. if you check out Mercedes, Porsche, Tesla forums, people complain of the same thing. don't expect perfection out of consumer grade mass produced goods. I noticed some slight wavyness looking out the passenger side of my windshield today from the driver's seat. sure it's there. but if you just understand glass, you kind of go.. welp that's just the nature of the beast. if you look too closely you can spot all kinds of imperfections everywhere. no two items are alike.
