The U.S.A. is probably the largest market for Lexus cars and Lexus has chosen to treat its customers with disrespect. Disgraceful indeed. And to think they claim excellent customer service as one of the strong attractions to the brand. So many people have written to complain, and the only response they received is a generic reply from a standard template.

After my experience at Mazda Yesterday I called Lexus to relate the story.
I was now told that neither the '19 ES F-Sport nor the '20 RC-F would be upgradable.

More lies from Lexus. So theyre telling you that the ES19 from north america are not upgradeable, but the ones in Australia are?

Which is "the case?" That Lexus is lying? Or that the Australian version is upgradable, but the US version isn't?

So, you think that the US version CAN be upgraded, but Lexus has decided it WON'T offer the upgrade in the USA. Is that your guess/interpretation?

Is there a point here? I have no idea what the problem is with Lexus. I only know that originally I was told both of my vehicles were upgradeable and now I'm told that they will not be upgraded. I certainly can't say that I'm happy and I've complained. I also let them know that there are many PO'd customers out here

Just seeking clarification. There's enough rumor and confusion around this topic. Vague and ambiguous comments just add to it.

I agree. The whole thing just doesn't add up. I'm convinced there must be a lot more to the story.

I only know that originally I was told both of my vehicles were upgradeable and now I'm told that they will not be upgraded.
Consider the source. If it's a salesman, that's worthless. If it's a Lexus representative over the phone, even that's worth nothing.

I don't think Lexus cares. That's why I say the best way to address Lexus's hypocrisy here is to find out what Lexus Australia is doing and just do it yourself.

I just checked the Lexus Spain web page and here's what they say about a retrofit over there. Free for cars w/o navigation right now, Free for cars with navigation in June 2020.
Notice that the upgrade is available for ES cars produced from October 2018...
  • NEW MODELS WITH APPLE CARPLAY ™ AND ANDROID AUTO ™ SERIES

The first model that incorporates Apple CarPlay ™ and Android Auto ™ series is the new RX 450h MY20, which is scheduled for October 2019.

The UX 250h, NX 300h, ES 300h and RC 300h models will incorporate it as standard in their MY20 range available from December 2019.
  • INSTALLATION IN YOUR LEXUS AUTHORIZED CENTER

Lexus, in line with its philosophy Omotenashi, so install free Apple carplay ™ and Android ™ Auto on supported vehicles.

In your next maintenance, your Lexus Authorized Center will update your multimedia system software, installing Apple CarPlay ™ and Android Auto ™ at no cost to you.

  • VEHICLES COMPATIBLE WITH APPLE CAR PLAY ™ AND ANDROID AUTO ™

The models compatible with the installation of Apple CarPlay ™ and Android Auto ™ in your Lexus Authorized Center are:

    - UX (version MY19 and MY20) produced from March 2019
    - NX (version MY18, MY19 and MY20) produced from September 2017
    - ES (version MY19 and MY20) produced from October 2018

All other Lexus models are not compatible with the installation of Apple CarPlay ™ and Android Auto ™.
  • STARTING DATES OF THE INSTALLATION CAMPAIGN

The installation campaign in its Lexus Authorized Center of the new software on compatible vehicles has begun in December 2019 for vehicles WITHOUT Navigator, and in June 2020 for vehicles WITH Navigator.

If your vehicle is compatible, we will perform the update for free on your next maintenance at your nearest Lexus Authorized Center
  • I'll save you a trip to Google to find out what Omotenashi means:
  • Omotenashi. In Japan, there is a deep-rooted culture, which comes from sado (tea ceremony), called omotenashi, meaning to wholeheartedly look after guests. The term is a microcosm of the country itself, representing the Japanese mindset of hospitality centring around care rather than expectation.

Lexus in North America definitely does NOT embody omotenashi.

Thumbs down Reply from Lexus USA

Note this reply from Lexus to my request for an explanation of why the Android Auto retrofit is available to 2019 ES 350 owners in Australia and Spain, but not in the US:

Thank you for your response, and I it is my genuine regret that the response did not meet your expectations.
Lexus USA only handles inquiries or concerns for vehicles sold in the continental United States and manufactured to U.S. specifications, therefore, I am unable to offer an explanation or comparison about the product planning and/or product availability for Lexus models of a different region.
We hope you understand, and appreciate you for providing your candid feedback which has been captured here at the Lexus National Headquarters.
Sincerely,
Winter

Hello Winter --
Although your prompt response is greatly appreciated, its content is disappointing.
Can you or one of your Lexus colleagues explain why Lexus would make this retrofit available in Australia and Spain (and perhaps other countries as well) and not provide it to Lexus owners in the United States? There must be a reason.
Many thanks.
