Well I don't live in a dry climate. I live outside of Philadelphia where the humidity nears 90% in July. I've never experienced odors, chemical smells, or anything else with this system. It has always performed perfectly and either cools or heats flawlessly. I never turn it off early to avoid mold or adjust it between incoming air or recycling. It would be a nice addition to have an A/C on/off switch on the dash (like my wife's Honda).

It is not the end of the world if a colony does develop on the AC core. It does not happen all the time but if it does you may need a couple of antibacterial treatments by the dealer to clear it up. Main thing is to try not to use recirc when the ac is on and preferably shut it off before you get to the end of your trip. The treatments are expensive but the dealer will repeat them at no cost if you are not happy. Car smells horrible for a couple of days after the treatment. You will have to drive with your windows open so don't do it when it is cold.

Or or you may be lucky like bc6152 and never have the problem.
