Hell to the no. Been using 87 since I bought it used with 79k miles. Just did the math and I saved around $2500 by using 87 although I have missed out on that extra 4 horsepower

Nope, this is on the cheaper 87 octane
However, last week I filled up a full tank at Target's gas station and drove it to almost empty about 90% on interstate and it averaged only 24. This is waaay below what I would get with 90% interstate, it would be 28+. Fill up after that was at my usual station and it is now at 27+ which makes me think that the gas at Target was different than usual. It probably had more ethanol than what my car usually gets, hence the decrease in mpg...

hard to believe that poor gas will cause 3-4 mpg but it's probably true
makes you wonder what does Target in this case do to their gas? dilute with water?

I don't mean to slam Target here. This was in Buffalo, NY and every pump is supplied locally from whatever source, and ethanol mix varies across the country...

Been doing a lot of highway driving over the past year and getting 32-33 mpg using 91 octane. '07 with >160k miles on it. I posted before on some anecdotal evidence related to mpg difference between regular vs premium here:

Basically is a roughly 10% drop in mpg using lower octane fuel but where I am I get the higher grade fuel for 10% more cost so it's a wash here in Ottawa, Canada. My wife just did a trip from western Wisconsin to Niagara Falls at the end of August and used 87 octane since the cost of higher octanes was a lot more than 10% and still ended up getting 30 mpg on that trip.

Note that premium gas will get you better throttle response based on advanced timing...

i run regular fuel in what ever area i am depending on what part of the country and what altitude your at the gas stations have differnt octane ratings for regular and premium
i also run a bottle of techron concentrate from chevron through my gas tank every 6-7 k
i get the fuel injection system cleaned out every 50-60k usually make sure my air filters clean free of depresses and that my oil always looks good keep my tires at 30-31 psi and my 07 ES350 with 212k on it gets me about 28-29 on the highway when im running around 75 MPH highway and drops to around 26.5 - 27 on highway on roads that are 80-85 mph
local city stop and go driving its around 18-20 mpg
