Default windshield part II

My insurance will cover the $1500 price of a OEM windshield from the dealer with me only paying the $250 deductable. However we just found out the dealer outsources the windshield installation to a mobile company that would do it at our house.

Does this seem odd? I thought the whole idea of going to the dealer was for them to do the work to the "factory" standard.

any comments appreciated

We had an Avalon that needed a windshield replaced. A mobile installer (I don't remember who) came to the house and put in an OEM windshield. Very convenient and they did a nice job.

Most dealerships don't do windshield installations, they source it out. Possibly to the same company who will come to your house or office..

LexBob2 is right - I don't know of any dealership that installs glass - the glass guys are just so much better at it and they have to be to make it on the money paid by the insurance companies. I would be more than happy with a Lexus glass installed by a good glass installer at my house.

Do be sure that they are talking Lexus logo glass when they say OEM glass. Sometimes they are just saying (incorrectly) third part glass meeting OEM specs.

I just had my OEM windshield replaced about 2 months ago at the Lexus dealer, they have an outside company that does their glass, and they came in and did it. No dealer I talked to does their own glass, they do warrant it as they do anything thats done at the dealer. Its a specialty thing.

I personally would prefer it done AT the dealer though, that way you can refuse delivery if its not right.
