Power steering fluid
hey all
i have a gallon jug of autozone brand “power steering fluid” but it’s no more specific than that. All I know is never to use it in my Honda (they have special fluid and others foam) back in the day I used dex/merc ATF. Just wondering what is supposed to go in our cars. I plan to replace the fluid soon
thanks

Should be written on the cap. You need Dexron II/III or compatible ATF. Some bottles labeled power steering fluid is just that, other types are vehicle specific and not the proper hydraulic fluid required for your car. If you don't know what the stuff is exactly don't use it.
Correct, it says Dex on the cap. I'll use what I have on my shelf for my TH350. The AutoZone stuff I have says its compatible with virtually everything (specifies GM and others) and actually says not to use it in a Honda/Acura.
I will be (hopefully) taking apart and cleaning my reservoir/screen and replacing all of my fluid. Need to gather some clear/translucent gallon jugs and hoses to so I can get the jugs where I can see them through the windshield and do this alone, with the car running, until new fluid is coming out into the "old fluid" jug. My steering isn't hard; its what every hydraulic Toyota I've had feels like, but perhaps a little stiffness creeps up on us, like shocks over 100,000 miles... i personally LOVED the electric steering in the 2014 Avalon Hybrid I had, and I love even more 60's Cadillac power steering because its effortless but its noticeably hydraulic. I know I could never have that in my ES but anything helps. and no noticeable change is fine, just glad to maintain this old girl. 300,000 is the goal.
