Alternator replacement
How difficult is it for a "non mechanic" to change an alternator on a 2ND generation ES300? I recently purchased a brand new battery but today my battery light on the dash came on. After doing some testing it seems that the alternator is no good. I'm ok with that the issue I'm having is whether I can do it myself or should I look for a mechanic to do the swap?
It all depends on what alternator you get. If you go with a lexus alternator, you have to install a conversion kit as the belt is shorter as it is designed to put out more power. If the bolts come off easy, then it is pretty simple. My bolts were literally hydrolyzed on. Very difficult to get off, not a lot of room to work on a GX470 either
I've had no issues taking the alternator off from my 96 ES300. Also, if you have a multimeter, you can bench test it yourself. Typically, an alternator issue indicates brushes are worn or a diode issue on the rectifier. You can buy a rebuild kit, hopefully from Denso.
The starter can be rebuilt, too.
Try to purchase Denso parts.
