I have an 05 ES330 with 190,000 km . On and off for the past year I've had a rubbing or scraping noise from the rear passenger brake. I figured it was just a rust build up on the rotor so I just had the rotors and pads replaced by a reputable brake shop. For the first day or two the sound seemed to have disappeared. However, it has now returned. Its a rubbing or scraping sound that increases or decreases in frequency with the turning of the wheel. Its far more predominant during left hand turns and always with the brake applied.
Previously I replaced the caliper slide hardware also.
Any suggestions? This is driving me nuts.

 

The only way to know what the issue is is to remove the wheel and look at the pads/rotors. I suspect the pads are down to the indicator (or metal) and they are rubbing against the rotors. Here is a quick break down of the prices: pads +$50, rotors +$100, labour 1/2 hour.

the pads and rotors do take a bit of time to break-in.

when I redid the brake pads and rotors on our 99 Camry the first test drives had all kinds of scraping noises, till I took it on the freeway and did a few brake checks.

if you are still having the scraping noises after doing the above, I suspect an issue with the caliper itself or sliding pins.

Whoever serviced your brakes should have re-lub'ed the sliding pins. If it were my car I would rebuild the brake calipers, the seal kit should only run you around 10 bucks per side!

It could be as simple as the brake dust shield rubbing against the brakes. Try bending it back a bit with your hands.

Forgot to mention that the rivets holding it in could have rusted, or the whole thing is rusted out. If so, you can either pull it off or replace it. Most people just pull it off without replacing it.

thanks! S that was it. I tried bending the shield back a bit and it just came off in my bare hands it was so rotted. It wasn't rubbing, but there was a never ending buildup of rust at the bottom where it almost meets the rotor. Nice and quiet now.
