Default Speed sensor issues-- issue displaying odometer and dropping speedometer

1997 ES300

I worked on my balljoints about a month ago to replace each front balljoint. The job wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but I got it done-- with a bit of collateral damage, I believe.

When removing the brake caliper on the front left side, I removed the two wrong bolts and more than just the caliper came off. I bolted it right back on with no perceived impact, I thought, but since then my odometer and speedometer, at times, fail. In addition, sometimes the red brake light will pop up too. Other times, there are no issues at all.

Can someone tell me what I likely removed and how I can get things back in order? I probably misaligned the speed sensor is doing this job and need to get it back in order.

It may be best to take it to the shop, but maybe not. I haven't had much luck with google...

Check all plugs and wires. Sounds like the speed sensor plug or wiring is faulty. It feeds ABS system. As far as the speedometer, I would swear that is a sensor in the transmission. May be totally unrelated. Any CEL?

EDIT: Plugs and wires around the wheel, not spark plugs and wires!

Probably a loose connection behind the instrument cluster. Start with checking that.

97. I am not sure if it was just a correlation, I just feel like its plausible I boogered up the speed sensor, but Im reading that the speedometer is not affected by this speed sensor at all, so who knows. I'll get the specific code tomorrow.

The problem sounds like the speedometer. Most likely it just happened to go out the same time as the other work but not related. You can send it in to us for diagnostics or we can help you locate a replacement cluster. Here is a link to our gauge cluster diagnostics service:

Let us know if you have any questions. PM us with any specific issues and price questions.

Thanks,
