Default Speed Sensor Problems

My Speedometer on my 1997 Lexus ES 300 intermittently fails to work. I replaced the speed sensor but the problem remains. The speedometer most often fails when I drive more than 20 miles or so. It seems to be directly related to how far I drive. When the speedometer stops working the transmission stops shifting correctly as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated
