Unhappy Lamp Failure Sensor

Ok, so after months and months of driving with no tail lights and thinking and thinking and researching about what it could be, I am like 95% sure that it is the tail lamp failure sensor. I have read many write ups on that this could be the culprit behind this fault, so I go in my car to locate the stupid thing on the driver's side near the wheel well and.......I don't see it. I have followed the wires from the entrance in the trunk to the far left tail light and I don't see the sensor. I see a un-plug gray cable with an end resembling a audio/video plug you would put in a tv, but I do not see the lamp failure sensor. Please Help. This is becoming to be soooooo frustrating. Maybe I am just slow and I am just missing it. If anyone has like a pic of it or something that would help to. I am just tired of standing outside in the rain looking for it
