Default Radar Detector

What's a decent, good working radar detector that you have had good luck with? Not TOO expensive...

Default V1

The V1 is the best ($399)...Passport 8500($250+) (arguably) a not so close second.

did you guys know that if you mount enough aluminum pinwheels on your car in the correct position, it will render the cop's radar useless? just some factual trivia for thought.

Get a V1...I know several cops who use them and say they are by far the best on the market. I also reccomend you get a laser jammer. They are totally legal, and a regular detector is useless with laser, cause by the time your detector goes off, he has got ya.

You better check with your authorities on the laser jammer. My radar has laser protection, but laser jamming is illegal in some states.

Default Laser Jamming

Egainer,

I don't think Laser jamming is illegal at all, light (invisible light at that) is not something that can be regulated by the DOT or FCC. The FCC governs the "radar jamming" and yes those are illegal, but I don't think laser jammers are. They are most likely inneffective because the amount of light output you need is enormous. That may be changing though because my V1 false laser alerts when driving behind the new Envoys/Trailblazers, it also gets false laser alerts on the reflection from the Nav screen on my wife's RX. I think there are certain frequencies of infrared light that will set it off, and one could argue that those same frequencies could jam a gun...I don't know for sure, but something to think about.

felt like puttin in my input. the V1 has got to be the best radar detector out there, but the money part is freakishly annoying.
anyways the post about by the time your radar detector goes off, they've got ya... lol i've been in my friend's Protege enough to know that that V1 is very powerful. we caught a cop that was parked behind a building before he saw us. it's a great detector because of the directional arrows. (the one thing between the V1 and the 8500). i personally like to know where they are. but both have 360 degree detection so either will do very well. and radar jamming is illegal in a lot of states. i don't know about laser jamming.

My SC400 came with a detector already installed. It's one of those pre-wired out of sight detectors and it works like a champ. It has only a couple of settings like off/low/or high sensitivity and volume control of off/low/high. It's all in a small 4 inch wide 1 inch deep module with some LEDs. Anyone know what this might be?

Thanks.

I've been looking for a radar/laser detector and...it seems that radartest.com doesnt seem to swear by the V1.. I guess the BEL 980, and the Escort Passport 8500 seem to be the 2 best, coming in 3rd is the V1. I really like the idea of the arrows on the V1 but I guess the other 2 detectors seem to work better?

"We found the BEL 980 almost supernatural in its ability to sniff out distant police radar. Even in hilly terrain it detected the deadly new Ka-band digital radar gun at 7.6 miles, nearly double the range of the Valentine One and over twice that of the last-place K40. In disbelief we ran the test two more times, with identical results. It proved equally adept in countering X and K band radar. In town it chirped only one false alarm, a notable achievement."

"It ferreted out the lethal digital Ka-band radar gun at 40,222 feet, a virtual tie with the BEL 980 but fully 3.2 miles before the Valentine One. In the difficult curve test its X-band city-mode range bettered the BEL 980's by 1,681 feet and the V1's by 4,260 feet, a staggering 311 percent."

hmm.....

Edit: I guess one of the reasons some dont like the V1 is that its very large, I read to.. get full use out of the rear sensor on the device that you have to mount it in the center of your windshield...I guess this blocks your view quite a bit.. You could probably get tagged for that with cops these days..lol

Jayson,

I think you have a K-40 radar detector.
