Default Installing a Catalytic Converter?

I got the code P0420 once and I used some seafoam and it magically went away and then came back today so...I just ordered a cat. Anyone put it on themselves and have any hints? I've never tackled one before and just wondering if its something I can handle or if I should hand it over to a mechanic? (2000 ES300 186k)

Even though Code P0420 indicates a Cat problem, the problem is not necessarily, nor even likely, the Cat converter. Its more likely a bad O2 Sensor, related wiring, or several others.

Its never a good idea, to strictly rely on a trouble code. You always need to diagnose and pinpoint the exact source of the problem first.

So please don't install the Cat yet. If the problem ends-up not being the Cat, than you can at least (hopefully) get a refund on this rather expensive component.

Since its too late to return the Cat, than let's hope I was wrong.

Keep us posted.

I have to disagree, the P0420 code is a specific cat code, if there were problems with the O2 sensor it would throw a different code, (something pertaining to 02sensor voltage too high...)
