transmission question
My wife is thinking about getting the ES 350,,,, have been doing some checking and i keep coming upon something called "transmission flare",,,,what is this exactly?
It's all here in this forum - every question and answer you'd ever remotely even think of relating to the ES350's trans. Just use the Search feature above. You're going to need to take some time to read through the threads, but all the info is here.
The quick net is that the transmission has a tendency to "slip" when shifting gears. This is when the engine speeds up (tach goes up) and the car does not move forward until the transmission "catches". I suspect this is a minor issue considering the 100's of thousands of cars sold with this transmission. Usually on auto boards you only hear of the few who have had the problem.
The issue was more widespread on 2007 ES350 and 2007 Toyota Camry V6 models who both share the same 6 speed tranny. There are numerous TSIBs and many vehicle buybacks due to the issue. I would not say it was minor by any means.
On the 08s, it seems the vehicles with flares are few and far between. But, they are still out there. Don't listen to the sales department, they will tell you the issue is resolved. They will tell you anything to sell a car. If they hold true to their word, have them put it in writing, that you can return the car if the transmission flares during the first 60 days of ownership.
Good luck!

Like wanderer said, do a search on transmission and be prepared for a long read. Two years ago, the threads filled the first page of this forum. Seems Lexus has largely fixed the problem in the 08's. But like MD said, get it in writing. That way you are assured of getting one fine car!
