yeah the rear is a PITA... probably needs more than just the vcg though. these engines tend to start pouring oil at some point without seal replacement. ours is the only one hubs (pro toyota mechanic until back injury) has ever seen that did not leak, and that's because ours used to and he fixed it! lol

probably time for timing belt, water pump, crank seal, cam seals... maybe oil pan gasket. check power steering lines, trans pan gasket to start with. rear main might be leaking. check axle seals too.

we used all OEM parts (except some of the bigger stuff- rack and struts) for a reason.

we got ours with 168k, dead engine, for $600 also. at least yours is running good deal for sure. good luck with it!

oh and if you want pics of various states of disassembly in the engine compartment do a search for my es250 threads. i took lots of pics.

Default crowded

yea, i just got an ls400 too but thats at the mechanics(embarrasing story)so i picked this up, though it smokes alittle when its warmed up in the area of the rear valve cover, its just so crowded i cant tell what it is, but the car is quiet, smooth, etc, the ls is mine & the es is for my g/f & her daughter so i wanna make sure i can prevent as many problems as possible. looks like the oil is mostly middle & right side underneath, from up top it looks like a 16 yr old car, not messy or oily

we've never owned a 2vz-fe with that low miles on it, lol! i'd guess the latter.

iirc the camry had 132k on it when we bought it last year, 140k when it was totalled and we dumped the engine into the es250. it poured oil from the day we bought it.

Yours is the newer body style, the VCV10. In the USA, the VCV10 was only offered with a 3.0L V6, whereas in other markets, such as yours apparently, it was offered with a 2.5L V6 as well. Since your ES is a 1996, I'm not sure whether you have a VZ-series engine or an MZ-series engine. See if you can find any markings on it or take a picture. If it's an MZ-series, such as the 2MZ-FE, it's more closely related mechanically to the ES300 than the ES250 being referred to in this thread.
