I need to replace a worn out CV boot on my Lexus ES 300, 1993, does anyone have an idea on how much this should cost, should I take it to the Lexus dealership or any other shop?

had my cv joint replaced at midas. $220

 

Buy the OEM kit from lexus for ~45 (per axle) and have your mechanic replace it.

 

The kit from Toyota is cheap to replace the inner and outer boots but is the axle in perfect condition by not clicking or having contaminated bearing grease?
How long has the boot been cracked/ripped or is it just cracking?

#4: I am not sure how long the CV boot has been torn and how much damage has been done. How do I find out?

Also, I did not get the 120K service (my ES has 127000 miles now), is this 120K service recommended and if so, should I get it done at the Lexus dealership or elsewhere?

sradxb there's no way to tell without rebuilding it. So long as it doesn't click just re pack it with the correct type of grease & install the new boot.



Yes you should get the full tune-up done sometime in the future.
Barring some kind of discount, I wouldn't get it done at a Lexus dealer. I've *never* heard of one on the internet actually charging even close to what the fair price would be for them to still make a descent amount of money. When they get close, they're normally skimping out on a bunch of things.


Do it at the cheapest Toyota dealer. MAKE SURE you're asking exactly what the tune-up includes.


You'd be better off spending $10 on techinfo.Toyota.com & downloading all the factory repair manuals yourself - printing the Maintinence sheet for 120,000m off & taking it to a reputable indipendant mechanic with experience working on general Toyota vehicles (Specifically a Camry).


It *should* include checking a billion things on the car, changing oil & filter, differential fluid, powersteering fluid, flushing transmission fluid rotating tires blah blah blah.

New timing belt & water pump, new accessory belts.
Best to change cam & crank seals if they don't charge tons for it.

& they're suppose to check a billion points on the car too, but noone ever does.

 

update! during my coilover install my mechanic noticed i blew the other cv boot. they are charging me $80 including part for the work.

btw how do you blow boots like i have 2 in 3 yrs.

$80 is dirt cheap.
If you are having boots being replaced often then whatever you replaced them with the last time was some cheap boot.
When you say blow the boot what exactly happened to it?
What are they replacing the boot with a quick boot which doesn't have to have the axle removed to install it?

 

replacing with full oem boot. i checked on that last time and this time. they will already have that area pulled apart for the coilover install today. They also replaced my last one.....no problems at all with their work.

 

Something seems weird as the oem boots cost $70 a boot my jobber cost not retail.
I would call your local dealer just to price one kit to see what they say to confirm this.

 

I checked with local workshops for replacing the CV boot (on my 1993, ES300) and was told that labor is about $120 and CV Boot (parts) is $50 so total of $170 at Midas.
At Pepboys, they said they would only replace the entire axle for about $250 total
A local mechanic said he would replace CV Boot for about $150

All these much sound higher than what i have read in the posts, am I missing some details? Also as suggested in this thread, if i purchased the OEM part and had it installed, how much should it cost me approx.?

I replaced BOTH driveaxles for $230. shop around. use aftermarket, this is not one of those things that (IMO as a mechanic) makes much difference in reliability between aftermarket and New, because on a car that old, the only "new one" you are gonna get from a dealer is remaneufacturerd anyways.

 

Sean's broken a few CV joints & split an axle in half.
I've killed 2 cv joints.

It's not hard, nothing about our axles is very strong at all.

 

yeah i used to drove over alot of snow the past few year. i think im going to take it easy this year./
