3.3 Valve Cover Upgrade fixes Oil Consumption?
Has anyone tried replacing their rear valve cover with the updated 3.3L design with the screw in PCV valve? Supposedly it's a direct bolt on and the redesigned baffle and PCV valve fixes the oil consumption problems at highway speeds. Took my car for a road trip for the first time and I burned about 1 qt per 200 miles on the highway. In the city the car burns about 1qt every 1,000 miles. No leaks and I never see smoke from the exhaust.
Let me know if you've done this upgrade and what if any challenges you encountered and if it fixed your problem. Thanks.

I think Toyota had an updated valve cover for the 1MZ-FE with the metal screw in PCV valve.
I know 99-01 ES300's with VVT-i had the screw in type PCV, while the non VVT-i cars had the plastic ones.

Toyota updated the valve cover every year of production till 2006 from what i have heard. There is no way to tell a difference on the outside.
There have been folks on the RX300 side that have installed the newer valve cover.
RX300: I haven't had a need, with 208k miles It doesn't consume a drop of oil in my 5k OCI including when i'm on road trips that can be as long as 3k miles.
ES300: I haven't had a chance to take the ES on a long road trip, but on my daily highway commute It doesn't consume a drop of oil in it's 7500 mile OCI.

Thanks for the replies guys. The car only seems to consume oil on extended highway trips. In the city I'm only consuming about a quart per 1,000 miles, which according to my owner's manual is within specifications. Has anyone tried to install a later version valve cover? Did it fit without any problems?

+1 No oil consumption. I just did my spark plug last week at 145Kmiles (a bit too late). I also took out PCV to clean and put back. There were leak/wet from both front and back valves cover and some plugs got wet. Tight all nuts and check back a few weeks later. I would replace PCV with its plastic tube and check the 3 front plugs to see if it gets oil wet.
