98 es300 Heating / cooling fan stuck at low speed
Anyone have a problem w/ the heating /cooling fan? The fan LED indicator operates fine, but doesent seem to send the command to raise or lower the speed of the blower motor. My fan is stuck on low speed.

nothing! I think its the control unit thats mounted below the relay on the driver's side of the car, behind the radio (next to the gas petal)
But I want to know how I make sure its not the motor itself? I tested the wires at the blower and they read 12v!

Since the motor runs it is OK. The only other circuit that controls the blower motor is the "A/C Blower Motor Linear Controller"...say that fast ten time. It is located behind the Left side of the Dash. It connects across the blower resistor, power and the A/C control assembly. It has four connections and they are Black/White, Black Yellow, Yellow/White, White/Black. No details on the wiring diagram as to what is in the unit but it looks like it allows more current to flow to the blower motor which will increase the motors speed. Without it working correctly, the blower motor would run at only one speed, low.

Well its finally fixed. And, it only took one trip to the emergency room and 10 stitches to my wedding ring finger Word to the wise : when you go behind the dash be careful of the silver aluminum parts, because they might not LOOK sharp, but they are. -- I was pulling out that white plastic panel on the drivers side footwell thats inside the center console and it broke loose a little too easy and I caught my finger on the aluminum under the console. yes I freaked out & felt like a dumb *** (this was in September).
After fixing a VSV problem (ECU code P0446) and oxygen sensor issues, I finally got the motivation to fix the problem.
First I replaced the blower motor resistor with a new one, and it didnt solve the problem. Then I tried replacing the little box mounted just below it. Its in this picture with four wires going into it (this picture is from a 1st gen es300, but its in the same spot as the 97-99). One of the wires is red in the picture....

On the newer models the resistor is located just above this & is also mounted with two screws. Also on the newer models there is no red wire, its black/yellow, white/black, black/white and yellow/red (I think).
Its basically a transistor with a HUGE heatsink on it. Once I replaced that unit everything was fine. and it only cost me $20 for the part from a local recycling yard. (lexus wants about $125 for one).
Notes on replacing it : you'll have to unbolt the gas pedal to get it removed, and its really impossible to get at with a regular screwdriver. you'll need a right angle screwdriver or, Like i used, a Skew-driver attachment for the power drill.
Good luck to anyone else with this!!

Post 6 and 8 have the details. This Ebay part looks like the controller but they call it a resistor, does it look like this on the 97?
