Why Gas Mileage is SO bad?
Hello,
Wonder if anyone can share your experience & knowledge for my issue -
My 2005 ES330's fuel cunsumption is about 12-14 mpg, which is really bad. I tried everything I could such as cleaning MAF sensor, replacing air filter, adding engine cleaner addtive. Unfortunately nothing is improved.
In addtion, I don't think gas tank leaks becasue I never smell gas when it parks in garage. However, I do smell gas from muffler pipe when the car is started.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Gary

Fuel economy is a trick subject. It depends a lot on driving habits. Do you mostly drive in rural areas and/or a city? How aggressive are you with acceleration and braking?
One other thing to check is your tire pressure and alignment, but those have to be really bad to affect your MPG.

I went on a 1600-mile trip recently, with my wife, in our 2002 ES300. I realize that this car has a smaller displacement engine than yours, but nevertheless, door-to-door, our mileage on the computer was 30.0 mpg (90% Freeway, Premium). Since I always note gasoline quantity and odometer reading when I fill up, I was able to calculate the mileage again, at 30.0 mpg. Not too bad!

Half highway and half city.

you should get a obd/datalogger device OR obd scanner like an elm 327 and then use obd software and datalog a few trips.
they will tell you whats going on your fuel consumption, fuel trim, etc. thats probably a better way to determine whats going on if you have tried out all the basics and like Mr Booby said you have no alignment issues.
it could be, and i am just guessing randomly, that your o2 sensors or cat converter is bad? not bad enough for a check engine light but bad enough to throw off some readings and make the engine run rich.

Isnt a 2004 es330 a 6 cylinder? For some odds reason right, on my 99 es300 if i was to put in 10 dollar worth of regular gas, it would last me for about an 1 hr of driving, compare to if i use premium, it lasts me twice as long.
