Is $570 excessive to replace EGR on '98ES?
My neighbor was telling me his '98 ES3 had some hesitation while driving at certain speed and the local Lexus dealer said it was the EGR valve, EGR position sensor and fuel filter which totalled about $570 tax included for the repair. I felt that amount was excessive since those parts shouldn't be that expensive (I'm guessing here) but wonder any of you have had similar repairs done and the cost you paid at the local Lexus shop. Thanks.

If the EGR valve is getting replaced that part alone can be $200+, Then the labor of a trained mech can be $50+ an hr so it can easily add up in a hurry.
I Just got my '94 back which was throwing a CEL for the EGR valve not getting enough air flow, but it was caused by a vacum leak and cost a lot less then it could have.

If it is the diaphragm, it's dirt cheap. If it's valve, it should not be that expensive. Often, it's the diaphragm that is dirty and required a replacement. $80 for Toyota part, and you can do it your self. Just plug and plug. 5-minute job. It sits on top, so you have all the space you need. There is no tight space.
I just replaced mine recently. It was hesitant. Shortly after, the code popped up. The guy just charge me $64 for after market one. He didn't have Toyota stuff. He said that it was the ERG valve, but I believe that it was the diaphragm. Valve or diaphragm, start out w/ the most inexpensive, and you should be good unless you have the code reader, assuming your engine light goes on. In my case, problem was solved.

Well, my neighbor really lucked out since he doesn't need to pay a dime. Looks like the parts and labor are all covered by a special "enhancement" warranty from the Government & Lexus that extends the standard emission warranty to 14 years or 150,000 miles for 1996 to 1998 ES3 models. He said this "enhancement" verbiage is listed in the Lexus website.
