Either your cv joints or rack and pinion, it happened to me a while back. You should get that checked out ASAP ...

There is also a slight chance that its a loose bolt @ the lower column to rack coupler joint.

That's the exact problem I had, except that my cv joints were also bad at the same time , not a good combo.

Did you mean to say "a loose bolt at the lower column of the steering coupler (or "rag" joint)"?

Just wondering how I should describe this to my mech to be checked.

I have the same problem but it is less noticeable after a few minutes of driving.

Tell your mechanic to check the bolts on the rack and pinion, and also have him check the cv joints.

There will be a clamp @ the bottom of the steering shaft where it is joined to the the rack input shaft. sometimes its tightening bolt can loosen slightly, it doesnt take much loosness for it to get noisy.

Cool

buy new axle half-shafts. never replace cv joints. the cost differance is nominal.
About $75 an axle. Some transmission fluid.

You could do it for $150 yourself if you're capible of working on the car, otherwise afew hundred bucks.
