Odd that the Lexus shop said they didn't know. From what you are saying it's having to do with the ambient sensor not functioning properly.. They should turn OFF/ON automatically depending on the ambient (light/dark). Do they turn ON early morning while its still dark? Do they also turn ON when it is already daytime? See from those results. You can also just put something over the sensor, which is on the passenger side dashbaord towards the windshield. With your lights on AUTO in daylight, place a book or carboard over it and see if they turn ON. Which they should since it's "dark" then take it off and it should turn OFF. If this doesn't happen then something is wrong with the sensor. Im not sure if you can reset it. Check the manual if anything or have Lexus look at it when you take it for service.

Yes, all of my Lexus vehicles function properly as well.
One thing I noticed, I have dark tints and the auto headlights will turn on earlier before it's dark and stays on longer. When early in the morning, the auto headlights will stay on longer until it is fully bright outside.
I remembered there is a head light sensitive adjuster in one of the menus in the navigation system display......
