Default Help :) code reader?

Hi there my name is Kai King and i have some issues concerning my vehicle. Im a new owner had my car for about a year and its never given me a problem. Just recently the radiator cracked and i had a issue where the car turned off and i had to get it towed. Now im not a mechanic but i know that the car isnt working because of the radiator. So im narrowed it down to the starter or the alternator. I wanted to know if anyone had a code reader that they could hook up to my car and check things out for me. Of course id pay you for the services but im not paying 140 at a lexus dealership for that and im not paying 85 for a normal one either when i can either buy the coder or borrow one. so please if anyone has one and they live in the southern cali area, preferably the i.e lmk thanks

you can buy a cheap one for 30 bucks just buy it and keep it... you will need it later on anyways even harbor freight has a lame duck one you can use... I have the snap on brick and its well worth the money but it does more than just codes that is why most shops like me check codes for 30-40 bucks

30 bucks huh? where did you purchase one for 30? i've been seeing them for autozone for a bit higher then that. and that would certainly work im planning on taking it to the shop i just wanted to diagnose it and get into the habit of taking better care of my car and being on top of the situations

AutoZone and Kragen also have some code readers you can rent out for free. They do parts rentals for a small fee or free, from what I remember.

Depends on what goodies you want on the scanner.

I keep one of these code readers in my own RX300, simple and effective and also uses CAN protocol to read even newer cars,

A code reader will only help if your car is throwing a check engine light (CEL).

I suggest if you are gonna buy a scanner, buy one that can read live data. Buying just a code reader is just plain turd.
