New Device To Target Chicago Speeders
New Gun Uses Laser Technology To Catch Lead Feet

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chicago police have a new way to find out if drivers are going too fast.
CBS 2's Rafael Romo reports that the new technology that could lead to an increase in tickets.
The new tool in the department for traffic enforcement is a speed gun that uses laser technology instead of radar to catch people speeding.
The device is called LIDAR, and police say it's the most accurate speed gun they've ever had. Eventually, it will read license plates as well.
"We can pinpoint which car we would like to get the speed from by looking through the viewfinder it shows us on our screen," said Sgt. Greg Reynolds with the police traffic division.
After using the gun three days in one district, traffic officers gave
469 tickets to speeders.
But police says it's not about collecting more revenue for the city.
"This is an effort to make our streets safer," said First Deputy Charles Williams with the city's traffic bureau. "If individuals out on our public streets don't want us picking up revenue, it's very easy -- obey the traffic laws."
Each one of the devices cost $3,100, and the Chicago Police Department has already purchased 20 such guns. The goal is to have enough guns for each one of the 50 districts in the city, with a total of 80 guns in the next two months.
Officers targeting lead feet will be deployed in areas where speeding is common.

Well sort of....
If you happen to be the individual that gets targetted with Laser, your V1 can't save you. All V1 does is detect and alert. Unfortunately, Laser guns are instantaneous....the moment they hit you, they got a speed on you. By the time you've been alerted, and react to slow down, it's way too late.
On the other hand, if the car next to you (or ahead of you at an angle) gets hit, the V1 could help.
What we'll need now is a Laser jammer, which is NOT illegal like a Radar jammer would be. FCC regulates radar, but does not for Laser jammer.
I know a handful of the S2000 guys use Laser jammers. I've seen how they work, and they are great. It may be time for me to invest in one or two for my cars.

the news about lasers was mentioned last night in the news. I think it was either ABC or FOX.
Additionally, radar cameras are also being installed. However, there are no signs there are photo radars that let you know they are there.
More and more of the photo radars and laser speed guns are getting installed all over the place. I suspect they will get installed first where its known for speeders.
Anyone know if the photo radar dectectors have made it to the US yet? if so, what is the brand name?

I've heard that Laser doesn't work well unless it's a clear day b/c the laser defracts....any truth to this? I've been hit with laser twice and my x50 goes crazy! Urmil is right though....laser is instantaneous and even though my passport has laser detection, it won't help....
I saw a hilarious piece in those SkyMall magazines they put on airplanes. It is a spray on film that is clear in daylight. But when those cameras flash and take the picture of your plate, it becomes white or reflective so they can't get the plate number. It is used specifically for these types of situations. I thought it was really funny.
