And I don't see how this shifter takes up less space...
It’s poorly designed, the shifter does look go. Not sure it was designed to save space. The gated shifters don’t work as well on Toyotas newer designs.
here is the LS500

Dateline 2016 - Toyota Motor Co. is recalling about 340,000 Prius hybrids after receiving reports of a potential defect with the car’s parking brakes. The Japanese automaker ordered the recall after it “received reports of crashes, injuries and deaths,” though Toyota has not released specific details and said it is “still looking into the reports.” In a statement, the Japanese maker said that, “On the involved vehicles, there is a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative.” In a situation where “the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than ‘Park’ while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.” Rollaways have been a problem for a number of manufacturers in recent years, though the biggest concern, of late, has involved a new generation of so-called e-shifters, electronic transmissions using non-traditional shift levers that might be moved, inadvertently to a gear different from what the driver had expected.
Just sayin'

If comparing to the picture above, it's 1.5" wide vs. 5" wide. The entire control stack would have to be either eliminated completely, or moved way back so you had to hover over it with your elbow in the air.

Thats an issue with parking brakes, not the shifter. What happens when you exit the vehicle when its in gear is the transmission goes into park and the parking brake engages. Contrary to popular belief cars are not designed to be held by the parking pawl alone, you need to always use the parking brake.
When you use these shifters and you get used to them, if they are well designed like the Toyota/Lexus shifter there is no way you're going to be in the wrong gear. My issue with them is they just don't provide any benefit and are different for the sake of being different, not that they are unsafe.

But it doesnt have to be. You can do a regular shifter in roughly the same footprint as whats in the LC.
