Honestly, there are so many people that have no idea how to even connect their phones to the infotainment systems with simple bluetooth, overcomplicating things with something like that is just not practical. All the time I see people in relatively modern cars that clearly have infotainment systems talk on the phone by holding it to their ear, or worse yet with airpads in their ears to become completely oblivious to their surrounding.
I see this all the time too.

Except that the things you use voice control for can't be controlled by a ****

Oh I could totally reply to a text using Audi's MMI control ****. Unfortunately I'd have to take my eyes off the road for about twelve minutes to do so. Vs. dictate for 3 seconds, listen to the readback for another 3 seconds, say "send" and it's off.

I see this on a daily basis. I realize that I'm more knowledgeable about technology than the average person, but connecting your phone to BT is so easy, I just don't understand how so many people don't even bother. A lot of times, the salesperson at the dealer will offer to do this when you purchase the car...
I don't know lol! It's nice on PC since you can have two points of interaction so if you need to click on something you can just look at it and then press the eye for the eye tracked cursor, I was thinking you can do the same thing in the HUD so you can have the full interface in HUD and just have a pair button on the wheel to act as the press/back so you never have to look away from the road even slightly. It's not as fast as a direct button but it's nearly as fast as sitting down with a mouse and clicking but obviously in a car the latter is not possible but with HUDs getting better and better......
I can't remember the manufacturer, it may have been BMW, but an auto maker did a concept of this years ago. I think it was either MB or BMW.
another thing about voice control is the more you use it, the better it becomes in understanding your speech (including accent, if you have one). i can almost "hey siri" everything
VC is slow as hell and inaccurate. The fact you have to say something is inherently slower than a direct control like a ****
maybe in your old audi but new cars typically have fast and useful voice recognition. in both my hyundai and lexus i just hit the button, say "call xxxx" and it does. way easier than any other method. i also say "navigate to <business or address>" and it works flawlessly. i use both the car's voice control and android auto voice control. in my hyundai, if you tap the voice button it uses the car's vc and if you press a bit longer, it uses android auto.
Voice control is awful, especially for those of us who speak with an accent. Plus, I'd be embarrassed to send texts maligned by voice recognition, where half the words are not recognized properly. When others send me this crap I form an unpleasant opinion regarding their intellect.
That being said, I rarely proof read my emails/texts/cl posts, so if you see horrible grammar/spelling, pls don't judge too harsh.
Voice control and voice texting work great for me...with an accent I'm sure its harder.
VC is actually great at recognizing Russian, as it is a much more direct language, for the most part you spell directly as you pronounce. English can be a clusterpluck with often random pronunciation and a million of different accents. To make things worse, a bunch of my peers use what's called "Runglish", where they mix a bunch of English words into Russian dialog, or vice versa, or even worse yet, when they use modified words where they apply Russian tenses to English words. Add accents into the mix, and I assure you that full self driving, full speech recognition or full handwriting recognition will never happen.
BMW does very good HUD/steering wheel interaction, they don't do eye tracking, but I access 90% of functions I use during daily driving through the steering wheel controls and the HUD.
Nothing is faster/easier/safer than good voice control IMO. Want it, say it, car does it instantly. All without taking your eyes off the road.
Yes and yes and yes.

How fast do you need? I find it very fast IMO. Me: Hey BMW.... Wait a second or two for the system to respond. "Take me to 'business name'". Almost instantly, "I found the following... which one would you like?" and it lists a bunch of businesses with that name phrase in their names. All I have to do is touch it or use the big **** to select and go. I haven't done with Siri but I read it does similar. What is your way of doing it without VC? Or is it even possible while in motion?
I'm sure you have a lot (because you're in construction business)
Back to CarPlay... I was using iMap and my wife was using her phone to play music. Then I got an audio alert.... "Dangerous driving condition ahead" from OEM Navi. Is it a German thing or Lexus/American cars do too? I remember my previous Lexus would not allow two audio sources going the same time. Not sure how it is now.
