Not singling out Germans here, any direct injection motor quickly clogs up with carbon and loses performance. By 100k a lot of them are so choked up that valves no longer seal properly. I know some Toyota engines have a way around it by having double port and direct injection systems, but that adds cost, complexity and potential failures. Not to mention Bosch revised their pumps and injectors multiple times because they keep failing. Then you have all the leaking turbos, oil consumption, and other issues. These engines are absolutely glorious in brand new "lease and dispose" high performance cars, but not for heavy duty vehicles such as the LX.

The 5.7 is an old school engine, NA, port injection, huge displacement - it will last forever and perform like new for 200k+ miles with minimal maintenance. It is perfect for the LX, especially for people like AJT who use it to tow and some offroad. While not my cup of tea, the current LX is easily the best in its class, far better built than American BOF SUVs, and far more reliable that the fragile LRs and ridiculous G class.

The market right now is very unusual, but generally V8 MBs and BMWs depreciate horribly, that's why everyone leases them.

Ecoboosts have turbos that glow red after towing, ehhhh. Good ole fashioned displacement is the way to go. 5.7 does have an intoxicating sound.

The 5.7 is plentttty powerful. They tuned the transmission to make it feel so good and responsive. I wouldn't want one with the 8 speed auto.

It has nothing to do with the current market, the G-Wagen has always held its value.

This is a great comparo. Best vehicle for "end of the world". Land Cruiser vs G550 vs Wranger.

Not sure what the surprise is with the G-Wagen holding its value. All BOF-based vehicles hold their value, even if they're built like crap and unreliable as a Jeep Wrangler. The engine has little to nothing to do with it.

Regardless of the brand, certain types of vehicles will always depreciate more than others. For example, resale on the LS and GS is horrendous compared to the more mass-market ES/RX and BOF GX/LX. Prior to COVID, you could find 3-year-old GS's with the same equipment level and mileage as an ES of the same age for roughly the same price, despite the GS originally costing some $15K+ or more.

Walnut blasting is commonplace nowadays and takes care of the direct injection issue. I personally think you’re making broad generalizations based on the engines that came out in the late 2000s/early 2010s without realizing that many improvements and new engine generations have been made since then. Nothing is ever static. Regardless, yes a solid overbuilt NA motor is almost always the most reliable choice.

You’re also discounting the G-wagen’s perennially great resale value. They’ve always held their value. The pandemic just brought the ability to sell used ones for over the original sticker price.

Exactly, which is why I mentioned my last gen G63 barely lost money.

The current-gen G-wagen Is light years ahead of the one in this test. I owned both.

Which is like $6k invasive procedure, like I said its easier to lease and dispose.

The G class probably holds its value because of its cult following, which is has nothing to do with the engine reliability or the lack of. The Wrangler, the old Defender, and the LX also hold value extremely well, I guess they are rare enough and have very loyal following. I don't care for these types of cars, but I think the LX is easily the most practical one.

All on stock tires, impressive. It just kind of hurts to watch any of these other than the G, LX, and LC because they're made to handle it all day long.

And another thing, you could easily make it up that in high range if you just stuck to the side and had momentum, but I guess they were testing the nitty gritty.

This is far from the worst example but in so many off road "tests" people find mud to deliberately get stuck in, when you could have just powered right through it absolutely no problem if you were going faster than 5 MPH.

I misspoke, still have the current Gen. Meant to say owned and own.

What? Almost spit out my coffee. Walnut blasting cost me $525 and that’s pretty standard across any car with DI. The highest I’ve ever heard someone get quoted was $1000. $6k would give me a heart attack lol.

Kind of moving the goal posts here. Wasn’t ever talking about practicality or insinuating the LX is a bad vehicle. Just saying you can’t make a blanket statement that all AMGs have bad resale because clearly the G-eaten doesn’t.

Cool video, we need more tests like this. Wonder why they still had the old G-wagen.

They should do torque vectoring on the next LX, and locking diffs.

On AMG V8, just the gaskets that will need replacing are probably a few hundred dollars, nobody is doing walnut blasting for $525, lol. At least 3k and you gotta pray they put everything back together the right way.

Torque vectoring is not needed if there are locking diffs. New Land Cruiser comes with full time 4WD as well as front, centre, and rear locking diffs. Perfection
